Default Which ship ?

My father was the only one in his class that didn't serve on The Hood when it sank. I have his service number but can I find out which ship he was on at the time. I know it was an aircraft carrier but after the sinking of The Hood he would never talk about the war,

Try writing to:
Pay, Pensions and Personnel Administration
AFPAA ( Centurion) RN Records and DPA, Room086
Centurion Building
Grange Road
Gosport
Hants PO13 9XA

pHONE 02392702174

Give them all the details you have including your relationship to the person you are researching and his service number. They should send you a form to fill in. It costs £25. I did it for my Dad and it gave me a list of all the ships he had served on and the dates he was on the ships.

For your information Shore bases are also known as ships.

Hope this helps

Jane

Hi Jane,

Thanks a lot. I do know he was at Holland Wood Naval Base, Gosport but that's about all.

Hi Starlight.

I live in Gosport and I have never heard of a Naval Base called Holland Wood. There is however a Base called HMS Collingwood, in Fareham.

Hi Jane,

I thought Holland Wood was on his marriage certificate but it is not, only his number and ordinary telegraphist. My mother was living in Gosport at the time, his usual address in Essex. I must have got it from somewhere so must have been after the wedding. He was an officer at the time of the sinking of the Hood. My mother was a Canteen assistant N.A.F.F.I.
I will need to go through all my papers to find it.
