Default naval career

hello
on doing research into a relation by the name of patrick gillick it took me a while to trace him ,eventually i found him in the 1861 cesus as a boy rating on hms imregnable and again in the 1871 census on board tamar while his marriage cert for 1869 shows hms donegal, but yet when i downloaded a document from the na it shows d.o.b ,hair colour ,eyes where he was born, but under ships served it just shows tamar, any ideas as to why the others are missing ,or where i can find out ?

Would it be possible that their was a gap in his service dates and there are other records elsewhere that you have missed ? Other than that I can't think of anything else.

Hi again,

I have just had a closer look at mine and they all state age at beginning of service 18 years of age although at least one was on the ships before this age.

hi star light
yes i agree that service did not start until aged18 , as mine joined at aged 16 boy rating in1861 but his paper gives his lengh of service from 1863 until 1873 where it says shore ?? expired.i think that the ships that i mentioned may be training ships and that when they closed he was out of work ?
i might try and get to the na and have a nosey around to see what else i can dig up on him .

Hi the raven,

Could it say "Shore leave expired". This was the last entry on one of mine. I then found that he died of Typoid a few weeks later. So I take it he was taken ill while on leave and never returned to the ship.

Hi Raven,

I have looked at the image and it says " Shore C.S expired". I cannot find what this means but maybe someone else will pick it up now.

Hi Raven,

I have come across C.S meaning "Continuous Service". I don't know if this is what yours is.
