Default Newbattle Cemetery records

Recently I had some success in locating two of my ancestors who were buried at Newbattle Cemetery. John Black Aitken and his wife Jean Laing.

I was told by older family members that their son ALEXANDER LAING BOYD AITKEN (Their son) was also buried in the cemetery, but NOT in the same lair as his mother and father.

I searched the internet and found a site called local.studies@midlothian.gov.uk who have details of inscriptions at Newbattle. They came back to say that they had no record of ALBA but they did for his mother and father. They also commented that their records might not be complete

I know their are no headstones for either grave, so I am looking for a lair number.

I am assured by my Uncle ALBA is definately in Newbattle cemetery (He should know, he was there) but it's been such a long time he's not sure exactly where

So in a nutshell I am trying to locate my grandfather

ALEXANDER LAING BOYD AITKEN
Born 30th September 1901 Currie, Edinburgh
Died 5th June 1951 Chalmers Hospital, Edinburgh
Usual residence was 33 Mansfield Avenue Nrewtongrange, Midlothian.
Buried at NEWBATTLE CEMETERY, Midlothian.

CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE ME FIND HIM?

Fair fa' yer honest, sonsie face

Thumbs up Re: Newbattle Cemetery records

Hi Raven,

Phoned the number on that site you gave me. They put me in touch with The Council Cemetery Section at Dundas Buildings in Bonnyrigg 0131 561 5280. They look after all the operational cemeteries in the area. Within 5 minutes they were able to tell me date ALBA was interred, how old he was, where he lived and the lair number in NEWBATTLE CEMETERY.

RESULT !

A BIG THANK-YOU

John

Hi Raven,

Yes I was, after the dissapointment of realising he was not in the lair with his mother and father. I think the lady at the other end of the phone sensed how happy I was as she gave a wee chuckle when she heard my reaction.

The funny thing is, I've been so desperate to find my grandfather that I've completely ovelooked the fact I now have the location of his mother and father in another location in the same Cemetery.

Not bad going for one week's work.

Many thanks again, have a nice week-end, back to the grind for me now. Never mind it will soon be 5 o' clock

John.

Hi Starlight,

Yes you are quite right, I didn't I was just so pleased to find my Grandfather.
However I am on the case now. I've found an email address in Edinburgh responsible for cemetery records for Currie Cemetery which is where I think the Aitken Children will be. Well, four of them anyway;

William Aitken died aged 3 Hours, 18 Jun 1894
Alexander Laing Aitken died aged 11 weeks, 29 Jul 1895
Mary Aitken died aged 12 Hours, 18 Jun 1896
Jeanie Aitken died aged 4 months 30th Oct 1903
All died in Currie on these dates.

Alexander Laing Boyd Aitken, I have found in Newbattle.

I still need to find death certificates for James and Margaret (Maggie) Aitken before I know what cemetery to look in. James was born in Currie possibly?? Margaret was definately born in Currie -5th Jan 1898

regards,

John

PS. You've no idea how excited I was to find. Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother all in the same cemetery, all in the same week!
