hi
There is a brother called Patrick and other siblings who were born later in Rochdale Lancashire.)
in that case yes, I`m his great, great, great grandson. William had a son Patrick born in 1861 in Westport. by 1881 the familt where living in Castleton, Rochdale, Lancashire Patrick married Hannah Eastwood, and they had a son Edmund in 1886. He married Bertha Leach and their eldest son Jack is my grandfather.
How are you linked? I have quite a bit of info on the William and Honors family after 1881.
Hi
I think i have sent you a private message but just in case here is some info i have: William is my Gg grandad, his son John married Mary Ellen Hartley (formerly Wild), one of their daughters was Maria who married Harry Foster and the youngest of their 17 children was Malcolm my dad.
I am really struggling on this side of the family, i only have a couple of photos of my nan (Maria) as i am told that they had a fire in the house and most of their pictures were destroyed. I have a photo of Mary Ellen Barrett and her daughter Elsie which i believe was taken when John died but it is only a copy i got from my Aunt Doreen.
I would be most interested in anymore information or photos from this side of the family.
We live in Rochdale, my name is Maria.
I look forward to your reply.
Hi Maria,
Here is a little more,
William was born in 1821 and Honner in 1841
I have as their children John b.1859 Westport, Patrick b. 1861 Westport, Annie b.1863 Westport, Mary Anne b.1865 Westport, William b.1867 Westport, James b.1872 Rochdale, Elizabeth b.1874 Rochdale, and Agnes b.1878 Rochdale.
Apparentlt Patrick and another brother, but I don`t know which did some prize fighting in a circus for a time and my mum remembers a picture of Patrick at her grandads dressed in his fighting gear, with arms folded across a barrell chest and bullet shaven head sporting a spotted cravatte around his neck. He later worked as a carter, then a weaver, and finally a navvy. He died around 1906. Hannah was by this time in a bath chair, and there is a story my grandad used to tell me of how as a little boy he was sent to wheel her up to the White Lion Pub to break up a fight between the Barretts and who appear to have been a perennial enemy a family also from Mayo called the Donneleys. She did this by laying about all and sundry with her cane.
Patrick (my great great grandfather)married Hannah Eastwood b.1860 and they lived at 15 Watkin St. they had the following children, Sarah b.1882, Mary Emma b.1884, Edmund (my great grandfather) b.1886, Thomas b.1890, and James Hollins.
In the Great War Edmund served with the Lancashire Fusiliers in Salonica and France, being wounded in October 1918. James served with the Gloucestershire Regiment in France being wounded in 1917 and loosing his leg.
I`ll get a bit more detail and send it on. Do you have any other info.?
Best Michael
Hi Michael
This is a great story, just the sort of information i am interested in. My Aunt Doreen tells me that her Grandad (John Barratt) had a "peg leg" and that he was a fisherman but she is 80 and i wonder if she may be getting the story mixed up with you saying James lost a leg.
Unfortunately i dont have a lot of info i could pass back to you, i think i have the location of Williams grave in Rochdale Cemetary and i have copies of Patrick son Edmund WW1 records on Ancestry, i have a few photos of Johns Daughter Maria Barratt and one of her mum Mary Ellen with Elsie but thats all.
I am the youngest child of a youngest son of 17 children and as such as i am now becoming interested in my family history there are few relatives left who can help or in the case of my dad remember(which has been a little frustrating considering the size of the family). My dad was only 14 when his mum Maria died so he really does not know any stories anyway.
I really appreciate any information / stories you dont mind sharing.
Maria
Hi Michael
I was wondering if your mum still had the picture of Patrick and his brother in fighting gear and if so would i be able to have a look? I think you can put pictures on this site but i am not too sure? Also do you know if the prize fighting was done around Rochdale, i can do some research at the local studies library if it was, there may be some information or even pictures there.
I have a copy of the 1911 census with Honner and family on it if you are interested?
Speak to you soon.
Maria
Hi Maria,
She hasn`t got the photo, she thinks when her grandad Edmund died his eldest daughter Annie took them all, but she is not sure. Apparently her dad Jack was too upset to help go through his fathers things. I`ve been unable to track them down, the family becoming somewhat estranged in the late 1960s, not sure why. i do have a picture of Edmund and Bertha though that I can send. I`ve got Edmund and James military records from WW1, I think you might have Edmunds already, but I can give you James as well if you like. I`ve also got the family on the 1881 census, and Patrick`s on the 1891, but not Honner on the 1911 so yes I`d definatly like a copy if poss.
I understand off my grandad that they fought in fairs in Cumberland in the early 1880s, he reckoned thats where the family first arrived on the mainland. But if we could track it down that`d be great. I do know that my Grandad also told me that he`d been told that his granded had once fought for prize money at a fair near Hollingworth Lake. Patrick died before my grandad was born, so all he told me came from Edmund his dad. I`ll see what else my mum can come up with.
Best Michael
