When trying to search the IGI without a first name, ie by surname only, it won't allow you to narrow your search by filling in the boxes for parents, event, and year. If you put an asterisk (instead of name) into the 'first name' box you will then be able to do a narrowed search. I find this most useful.

Thanks so much for what appears to be a very handy tip indeed. It is very frustrating when a search cannot be narrowed on IGI. Can't wait to give it a go.

Hi Slizzy,

Although I have found that the majority of my ancestors were baptised in churches that did not allow the LDS to view there records, this tip would have saved me hours in the past.
