    Default Rosscommon/Leitrim - Soroghan

I require help in locating references to the following Irish names :- SOROGHAN, SORAGHAN, SORAHAN & other varients.

I found & lost a reference to a marriage in Rosscommon, circa 1858 between Eugene (Owen) SOROGHAN & Elizabeth REILLY (O'REILLY) My Grt Grandparents. Both where born circa 1840. Possibly in Leitrim or Cavan. They had a daughter Elizabeth in Stradone, Cavan 1862. Also a son James in Ballyjamesduff 1864, then migrated to Scotland.

There are a number of SOROGHAN's in Monaghan, Louth. Some I am told changed their name to Sullivan

O'Reilly's were the main clan in County Cavan.

Any help whatsoever will be very much appreciated. ....... Jimbo West OZ.

Thank you Carol. That is a very curteous offer. I also have an interest in the name of "Padyan" (Padian) believed to come from the Rosscommon area.

    Very much appreciated ....... Jimbo

    Hi

I am a Soraghan by birth. Born in Dundalk, Co. Louth...very close to Cavan and next, almost to Monaghan. My Dad's father and his brother both married sisters, not sure where from. CAn find out their maiden names. My dad's parents owned a pub on the 'Cavan' Rd in Dundalk, called Soraghan's where my Dad grew up. Pub is still there although many my Dad's siblings (8 in ALL) (have passed away in the last few years, primarily due to old age. My Dad celebrated his 80th this past Summer. Hope this helps

    Hey

I just seen your request and had a quick look for you. There are plenty of Soraghan (and other spellings) in Leitrim and Cavan.

Here are some of the things I've found:

    Birth - 1835 - Eugene Soraghan - Co Leitrim

    Marriage - 1858 - Eugene Soraghan & Elizabeth Reilly - Co Leitrim

Birth - 1862 - Elizabeth Soraghan - Co Leitrim (this conflicts with your suggestion she was born in Cavan)

Marriage - 1859 - Owen Sorohan - Co Cavan (may not be connected)

    Birth - 1862 - James Soraghan - Co Leitrim

Birth - 1863 - James Soraghan - Co Leitrim (separate record for separate year)

Additionally I've taken a look at two of the actual records. I've posted the web address below and you can log on yourself and look at the indices.

    Church Marriage

    6 Nov 1858

    Gortletteragh R C Parish

    Co Leitrim

    Eugene Soraghan

    Elizabeth Reilly

    Church Baptism

    9 Feb 1862

    Elizabeth Soraghan

    Gortletteragh R C Parish

    Co Leitrim

    Father - Eugene Soraghan

    Mother - Elizabeth Reilly

One of the two James Soraghan births listed above may be correct.

However, you can view the indices for free but it is 5 euro a shot to look at the actual records and I was feeling generous today !!!!

The records are getting quite good now for Ireland but expensive to view. The search facility is quite good and you need to flip between counties by using the 'map' option. The records are displayed up to 10 at a time so you need to page through each time period using 5 year periods or to see all the search returns.

I've picked up your e-mail address from above and have sent to two originals I looked at. Please let me know you get them ok.

    Cheers for now

There are also loads of Padian (and many variations) for both Leitrim and Roscommon coming up in the index. I took a look at the birth indices only.

    Happy hunting.

G'day Hibernian. Received your atachments in good order. I don't know how to thank you for the copies & information. If on your next visit to OZ, I will treat you to two whole "slabs" of beer. Just make sure you get to Mandurah, 70 Klms south of Perth. (Slabs are cartons containing 24 can's or bottles.)

A few years back I was on the Ire-Gen site, run by John Heuston. He was also very helpful.

I will make a search of the IFHF site & see if I can find the rest of the Soraghan family. I don't suppose you would know the correct pronunciation for Soraghan ? I have SORA-kan, after the origin of O'Sorachain.

Your first name is my second name. (James Patrick)

    My deepest thanks ...... Jimbo.

    Hey Jimbo

Sorry I haven't replied sooner. Haven't logged on to Ancestry Aid recently.

Glad to hear you received the information ok and glad I could be of help.

Sorry, but can't really help with pronunciation of the surname but suspect it can be pronounced as you have indicated or even sora han. You would need to consult an expert but I do know that the letter 'h' in irish is unusual in that it is used to harden the sound of consenants (such as g) when used in conjunction with them. It may even be true that 'h' as a letter didn't exist historically in irish but is found in the modern form of the language.

Thanks for the kind offer of the slabs of beer. Not sure I could cope with all that amount in one go though! I may get over to Oz again in the future ( I was there twice, 11 and 12 years ago) and may be back in Sydney for a friend's wedding in the mid term future. Would be good to get to the Perth area as I've heard its a wonderful place.

Hope you had some luck tracking down more info on your ancestors. If you need any more help, it would be limited as I live in London rather than Ireland, then by all means give me a shout.

    Cheers for now.

Hi all. Just updating on my search for SORAGHAN & PADIAN. Hibernian kindly sent me copies of Wedding cert, for Eugene Soraghan to Elizabeth Reilly (1858, Gortletteragh, Leitrim). He also sent me copy of birth cert for Their first child Elizabeth. (same location). I have also a cert for elder sister of Eugene. Bapt 17/11/1833 in Cloncomber, Leitrim.

My grt/ Grandparents are giving me a problem at the moment. Patrick Soraghan wed Mary Padian (Padien) but, where or when ? There are clues in Co Rosscommon & also in Co Louth, between 1821 & 1824.
If anyone who is familiar with Iriah records. Could you please help me .
I will be very appreciative of any information given.

    Jimbo in OZ
