    Default MEALEY / MEALY

Looking for anybody researching John MEALEY born abt 1839 in Laois County to Patrick MEALEY and Mary DUNN. John married in Belfast on 17 August 1864 to Eleanor Clarissa GREEN of Manchester England.

They travelled to NZ in 1865 but came to Melbourne Australia not long after. A son Charles MEALEY was born in NZ in 1865,

    Regards,

    JoGo

    Hi Jo,

My name is Shane Mealey and the family you are searching are my direct descendants.

I think I have come across one of your threads on another site? And have been unable to contact you, as your email bounced back to me.

    Regards,

    Shane

    Hi JoGo

Chas & Julia (nee DUNN) married in 1886 in Victoria (reg 3913). Julia was born in Gisborne Vic in 1864 to Thos & Margaret (nee ROACH) (reg 22091).

    Their children:

Ellenor Julia 1886/20344 Melbourne, m. Jas Alex CLARK 1914/11793?

Alice Wilhelmina Catherine 1887/20699 Hotham, m. Wm BAKER 1912/2131, d. 1932/1819 Melb Sth aged 45

    Mabel 1889/22825 Hotham West, d. 1890/16900 Melb W aged 1

    Mabel 1891/24160 Hotham West, d. 1891/2448 Hotham W aged 8 months

Alice had 2 children in 1908 and 1910, both in Carlton, prior to her marriage.

John MEALEY died in 1872 aged 33 son of Patrick & Mary (nee DUNN) (reg 2007). His wife Eleanor remarried in 1874 to Fredk Wm Ernest KIESEWETTER (reg 150), who was born in Berlin. They had a further 4 children in Melbourne 1874-84. Eleanor died in 1889 in West Melbourne, daughter of Ernest (reg 8857). Fredk remarried in 1890 to Esther CLAYDON (reg 1478). He died in 1926 aged 80 in Box Hill Vic (reg 8562), parents unknown (b. c1846).

I think John & Eleanor may have had 2 daughters in NZ (Mary and Ann) in 1864.

They also had a son named Frederick John in 1871 In Melbourne (reg 4229). He married Charlotte PHILLIPS in 1892 (reg 3707). Frederick was on the finance committee of the Victorian Football Association in 1909. He was also a chairman on one of the committees of the Catholic Young Men's Society of Victoria in that year.

    Chn of Fredk & Charlotte:

    Fredk Jno 1892/21306 Carlton, d. 1957/13427 Brunswick aged 65

    Francis Patrick 1898/10757 Essendon, m. Doreen Mary ARTER 1930/861, d. 1971/19927 Heidelberg aged 74

    Vincent Anthony 1906/10359 Essendon, m. Gwendoline BELL 1934/11419, d. 1977/16452 Bendigo aged 70

Fredk Jno jnr and Francis are buried together at Fawkner Memorial. Also with them is Esimena PHILLIPS aged 65 (an aunt, sister of Charlotte) who died in 1932. Doreen Mary MEALEY (nee ARTER) died 28 Oct 1992 aged 92; she was born in Essendon in 1901 to Francis Michael & Nellie Winifred (nee O'SHEA) (reg 2972).

This looks to be about Fredk Jno jnr:

The Argus, Wednesday 18 October 1933

    ACQUITTED OF SERIOUS CHARGE

Frederick John Mealey, aged 41 years, clerk, of Essendon, was found not guilty before Judge Williams in general sessions yesterday, on four charges of indecent offences against a young girl.

He was discharged. Mr J. M. Cullity (instructed by Mr. N. H. Sonenberg) appeared for Mealey.

    And so is this:

The Argus, Tuesday 3 September 1918

MEALEY.-Mr and Mrs F J Mealey, of Shaftesbury street. Essendon, have been advised that their eldest son Warrant Officer F J Mealey, 6th Battalion, has been wounded in France. He has been on active service for over four years. Their second son is still on active service in France.

    And the other brother:

The Argus, Saturday 26 October 1918

MEALEY- Mr and Mrs F J Mealey, Essendon, have been advised that their second son, Gunner Francis P Mealey has been gassed, but is progressing satisfactorily. He had previously been wounded twice. His elder brother, Warrant Officer F J Mealey, 6th Battalion, is still in hospital wounded.

Fredk Jno snr died on 12th Sept 1934 at his home in Shaftesbury St, Essendon. He was the manager of the overseas shipping dept of McIlraith, McEachern Ltd., where he had worked for 28 years. A requiem mass was held for him at St Monica's Catholic Church, Moonee Ponds on Friday 14th September. His wife Charlotte died on 10 March 1933 aged 62 at 15 Shaftesbury St, Essendon, daughter of Francis PHILLIPS & Mary CARR (reg 1880). Both are buried at Fawkner Memorial. Charlotte was born in Wangaratta in 1866 (reg 11818).

No sign of Chas & Julia... but I hope there is something new here!

    Hello Cherilyn,

Thank you for your information it was great. I knew a lttle bit regarding Charles brother's family but not all. My husband is descended through Alice's daughter who was born in 1908, she was his mother. How are you connected to the family?

Charles and Julia are a real mystery, not sure what happened to them, there is also a missing daughter from the KIESEWETTER marriage - Mary May Eleanor (Charles' half sister) either she died as a baby nad it was not recorded or she has gone with Charles and Julia.

Have not got very far with the Mealy family in Ireland, found the marriage of John Mealey on 17 August 1864
