Thread: Kia ora from Aotearoa!

Hi to all from the land of the long white cloud! All Blacks land! say no more!!

I have lived here for the past 24yrs, first in Rotorua, for a couple of months, then to Nelson in the 'mainland' [south island] and now in a little place called Waimangaroa at the base of an old ghost coal mining town Denniston high up in the clouds, with it's famous incline, which carried the coal down and the people up! It's just north of Westport on the West Coast of the south island! With a population of about 35,000 along the whole of the 'coast' the length of the island, no traffic lights! hardly any traffic! and always the 'west coast' wave! [a friendly wave from trucks and buses as you pass] A great place to live!!

But all my ancestors are from the other side of the world! Mainly Kent [Tunbridge Wells and surrounds, Deal, Canterbury, Ramsgate] Sussex [Brighton, Mayfield and surrounding area] with the odd stray from Northants [Daventry] and Scotland!

I have been doing genealogy for about 5yrs now and just love it, especially putting 'meat' on the bones! Also crafts and gardening [grow our own veggies!] when I can get the time! Look forward to 'meeting' you all, it looks like a really great site! Dawn

"Kia ora"?That's a popular fruit squash over here,no doubt it means something complimentary in Maori.Anyway,welcome to the site,some very friendly and helpful people use it,as I can testify.Writing from Stoke on Trent another ghost town,which used to be known as the Potteries,we had a steel industry and a thriving coalfield too.now it's a question of the last one to leave turning the lights out!

Anyway,enjoy your research,a rewarding and interesting hobby which has helped me trace my ancestors back to the 15th;century.
