Hi, I thought I'd introduce myself and mention some names that I'm currently working on.

I'm interested in the APLIN family in Devon, the BEELEY family in Derbyshire on my side of the tree and on my husband's side, the OWENS family in Liverpool and the THOMSON family from Scotland.

I live in the Netherlands and so all my searching has to be on the Internet - thankfully that's got easier over the past few years but I'm still frustrated with some 'brick walls'.

One particular event that's eluding confirmation is the marriage between my great-great-grandfather, John Smith and his wife Rebecca Cadman. Their first son, George William Smith was born in 1846 and christened in Madeley, Staffordshire but I can find no mention of their marriage. Rebecca is on George's birth certificate. I've tried the usual searches in BMD, parish registers (online), Ancestry, FMP and the local family history society but all to no avail. Any suggestions would be gratefully received (apart from travelling to Staffordshire, which is not possible at the moment).

I look forward to being a part of this forum.

Hello and welcome to AA. Good luck with your family history. How sure are you they married in Staffs? could rebecca have been married before?. Some certificates have been lost not sure which ones though or from where. perhaps they married a few years later than this date. I too cannot find anything for them. Do you have any census details for them?

Hi, thank you for your welcome.

No, I can't be sure they married in Staffs but I've also searched in Cheshire and Shropshire, with no luck there either. John and Rebecca are down as being born in Audlem, Cheshire and/or Whitchurch, Cheshire/Shropshire, so I've been searching in each of those parishes. I've also checked right up until Rebecca's death. The 1851 census has this entry:

    1851 England Census
    Ann Bedson
Age: 63 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1788
    Relation: Mother
    Where born: Atherley, Shropshire, England
Civil parish: Onneley Town: Onneley Staffordshire England
Registration district: Newcastle Under Lyme Sub-registration district:
    Whitmore
ED, institution, or vessel: 3b Household schedule number: 23 Piece:
    2001 Folio: 423 Page Number: 7
John Smith 31 b. 'Agricultural Labourer' born Audlem, Cheshire,
    England
Rebecca Smith 29 born Audlem, Cheshire, England
George Smith 5 born Onneley, Staffordshire
John Smith 2 born Onneley, Staffordshire
Ann Smith 3 Mo born Onneley, Staffordshire
    Ann Bedson 63 - Mother 'Visitor' b.
Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2001; Folio: 423; Page: 7; GSU
    roll: 87403.

I think Ann Bedson is John's mother, who has remarried but that's also a bit of a mystery still.

I have following census details too but nothing gives a clue as to the marriage and without that I can't find out for sure who their parents are.

Thank you for highlighting the Trickett family for me. I'd seen the 1841 census but the Tricketts hadn't occurred to me as a connection. I wondered if that death record for William Bedson was the right one, it does seem to fit, doesn't it?

I'm going to order the marriage certificate of Thomas and Martha and see who Martha's father is. A George and Elizabeth Smith have signed as witnesses, so they're probably related too in some way. Thank you once again.
