Hi My name is Anne, Im 57 and live in Christchurch, New Zealand, I am currently compiling a family tree or my children and grandchildren. I am now in contact with some long lost cousins here in NZ, and together we are adding to the family tree. The main tree is the Fox family, and the other is the Strange family. I was born in Canvey Island, Essex and left there to come to NZ 50 yrs ago, most of my family are in the UK, some went to Canada, and a couple came here to NZ. There are a couple of 'Brickwalls' that I have come up against in my search for our ancestors, hopefully someone here will be able to help break down the 'Brickwall'. In return I will happily help anyone who is looking in this part of the world for their ancestors, or lost family, I cant guarantee that I will come up with anything, but Im more than willing to help.

I wish you good luck with your search for your family tree and welcome you to the site. When you are are ready if you would like to post a particular querry , I am sure there will be plenty of friends that will help with your UK search. I am sure also those that want a NZ search will take you up on that offer. It is always good to have local knowledge.

In the meantime keep safe as we have heard about the weather and things in Christchurch. I would also like to wish you a Happy New Year as it will get to you before us.

Hi Anne

A good place to start is with yourself and record your own dob and where you were born . Then do your parents and siblings and work back from there.You need to get certifcates for births marriages and deaths once you have asked the questions either of those that are living . Otherwise ask the questions on here and someone can loook them up for you. record second names if appropriate as well.

Do a family tree as you go along that way you can see who you have sorted and who you hav'nt. D

ont forget the maiden names of the ladies change as they get married.

There are of course different lots of information contained on each type of certifcate which is why they are so important to get at a cost of 9.25. Record trades as well as they come in useful on the census rcords.

Its slow work to prove the facts but you can go quite quickly back once you get to the census records.

Also dont forget the wars and war medals and service records. Each give valuable clues.

The census information runs 1841 - 1911 and BMD's are availble nearly up to date

I hope this gives you a startting idea. I wish you luck but please do come back if you want more information.

Welcome to Ancestry Aid and good luck with your research.
I hope all friends and family are safe . Our thoughts have been with the people of Christchurch over this last week or two.
Post your names/ queries on one of the forums when you are ready and hopefully someone will be able to help.
As Bandit says just ask if you need more info and most of all enjoy it.

thanks Lola, and thank you for your thoughts, its nice to know the rest of the world are watching us.. its pretty scary sometimes. I have started to add my family tree to this site tonight, but was rudely interrupted by yet another 4.3 aftershock, leaves me feeling a little unsettled so I'm going to tuck up in bed now. thanks again

When you feel ready post a few names [deceased people only please] and I am sure someone will be able to help. I can imagine it must be a bit scary in Christchurch at the moment, our thoughts remain with all our members there.
