Hello. There was a John Thomson in Ayrshire 1318. His Army helped to defend Robert Bruce.
Also a Clan Thompson Site on the Web. You can google it. Type in the Family Name Thompson. was spelt then
in several different ways. Hope this will help

The surname Thompson is "the son of Thomas". Spelt this way with a "p" is more commonly found in England rather than Scotland. The Scottish spelling would be Thomson. It could then be that your ancestors are English rather than Scottish. Although they may have moved to England and adopted the English form of spelling at some point and then back to Scotland! Alternatively, they may have been English born and them moved to Scotland!
As Bronson 211 has posted, and from George F Blacks The Surnames of Scotland there is a listing of a John Thomson "a man of low birth, but approved valour" was leader of the men of Carrick in Edward Bruce's war in Ireland in 1318".
