Thanks pejay. Well, it would be nice to trace the eldest son of my gt gt grandfather Gervase Etchells. Alfred Etchells was born 1858 in Carlisle, Cumbria and shows in the 1861 and 1871 census returns but not in the 1881 census when he would be 23. I've searched the death indexes up to 1907 without success. He just seems to have vanished. Perhaps he emigrated. It's a real puzzle.
Yes I guess he could have emigrated. Did he marry? I did find a few marriages which may be him. I found nothing on later census detail even in a different county,. His name could have been mistranscribed. I found a birth for him well I think it is him Alfred Etchells 1857 june qr Carlisle 10b 401.

I didn't come across any marriages which seemed to fit his details. And like you, I couldn't pick him up in later census returns. Yes, I think your birth index detail is him.
