I am still a newbie to family research. I have only been researching since January 2010. I am currently working on my father in law's side who is only a second generation American. His mother's parents both came from Durham County and are from the families of Goundry, Simpson, Cherry, and Sokoll. They were coal miners that settled in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio (coal mines area of course).
My English roots go a little deeper and will get back to researching them some day. But I do know I am descended from the blacksmithing family of Lazenbee of Lancashire (changed to Lezenby here in New Jersey).
I also will be eventually searching for a Joseph Barnett who emigrated to the Louisiana area in the 1820's.
I have a subscription to Ancestry (US) and I am just learning where to look for UK records.
Dave
