Hi,
I've only just recently unravelled a huge chunk of my family tree after ten years or more plugging away trying to trace my Gt gt Grandfather Patrick Farrell. Thanks to the release of the 1911 Ireland census, completely free to search as well btw, I discovered that Patrick had already passed away, annoying but Irish relatives often are!! However, it did confirm that his wife's name was Eliza (B abt 1867) and that she was born in England (Not very helpful!) but it did give me all their childrens names and from this I was able to procure my gt aunt Lizzie (born 1888 in Belfast) birth certificate which states that her mothers name was Eliza Hatfield.
So, when I added up the amount of children on the 1911 census and checked with the children born alive column I realised one child was missing, so I have no idea what he/she's name was, an educated guess would be that it was a boy and his name was also Patrick, since none of the other boys are called Patrick and the eldest girl is named after her mother, its a fairly safe bet.
I digress, now, I've always been told that two of the boys fought in the first world war. I only have Frederick Farrell (b abt 1894 in England) and Edward Farrell (B abt 1896 in England) who would have been old enough to join up, unless there was a Patrick, but anyway, I was told the boy who survived was severly injured (family story is that he had a leg blown off, can't confirm this so not sure if its exaggerated or not) and that at some point he moved to Newcastle Upon Tyne.
I'd like to hear from anyone who thinks any of this information could help me confirm this story or if it sounds familiar to anyone. In 1911 the family were all living in Belfast near Sandy Row and Alice Farrell(b: abt 1892), one of Patrick and Eliza's daughters swears she was born in Aldershot (Never been able to confirm this either) I've taken a couple of wild stabs in the dark but nothing has ever really turned up, had a look on the CWGC site but couldn't find anything concrete on there either, I've even looked on the military genealogy site. No hits on any census records other than the Irish 1911 census, nothing on the LDS site, nothing on Emerald Ancestors, nothing on the UHF site. You get the idea....Irish ancestry is a nightmare. All I know about Patrick Farrell is that he was a soldier and then later on he joined the RIC and died sometime between the birth of his last child Florence in 1909 and the 1911 census.
Any idea's whatsoever please just post them, it maybe something I simply haven't looked at yet!! Thanks in advance!
Claire
