Thread: seeking Davis - UK and Pontypridd; Else - Kent and Doncaster; Young - UK; Booker

Hi everyone! Greetings from sunny, beautiful South Africa.



My name is Cherry (nee Davis) and I've been researching our family genealogy since my mother died recently in London in May 2007. Other than my sister, mom and dad, I had no idea where I came from or from whom I was descended! A dysfunctional family - to say the least.



I was born in Wolverhampton and arrived in SA in 1959/60, but am still a British citizen. My dad died in South Africa when I was 15. On my mother's deathbed, she (at last) told my sister a little bit about her very troubled - and incredibly interesting - past.



I've had a little bit of luck tracing immediate ancestors so far, but not enough to fill in the dark, yawning blanks. Unfortunately, the SA Rand/UK pound exchange is so horrific that I'm trying to get as much info as possible before spending my hard-earned bucks on BMD certificates etc.



I have found IGI, freeBMD and freeCen to be a great help, up to a point, as their records are still incomplete.



I'm researching the following family threads:

1) Booker - My mother: Kathleen Lilian, my maternal grandfather:

William Brown and his father: David (Balby, Doncaster,

Yorkshire; other areas)

2) Davis - My father: William Robert and my paternal grandfather:

Irvine (Pontypridd, Wales; anywhere else in the UK)

3) Else - My maternal grandmother: May Victoria (Ashford, Kent;

Doncaster, Yorkshire)

4) Young - My maternal great grandmother: Henrietta Martha

(Yorkshire; elsewhere in the UK)

5) Keeling - My paternal grandmother: Beryl (Ashford, Kent; Doncaster,

Yorkshire and elsewhere)

A huge thank you to everyone who sent their greetings and good luck messages. What an incredibly warm welcome! I hope I'll be an asset to ancestryaid.co.uk.



I found a few freeBMD and freeCEN entries over the weekend. All I have to do now is buy copies of the detailed documents but how can I be sure that the ones I order are the correct ones? I'm trying to do everthing right, starting from my mom and dad (both deceased) and carefully working backwards, rather than taking wild guesses or trying to 'prove' distant connections that may not, in fact, be true.



I guess it well get easier with time, as more and more entries are put on the Internet. Even so, I love the 'detective' side of researching. That really appeals to my nature and bulldog tenacity! I need these traits as I have no idea who my ancesters are: from grandparents to uncles and aunts and cousins. Discovering new names etc. is like slowly building up a picture, even though I have no idea what my ancestors look like.



Anyway, your cheer and kindness meant a lot to me!

cherry it is very addictive , its great when we find a rellie and soooo annoying when they hide it amazes me still what we find , the path they leave. You do get to know them . When i first began never dreamt i would be researching abroad lol too [ novice ] spent hours at libary and record office , now look we can research at home too.
