Default Shiel(d) family in Northumberland, London and NZ

Hello from Gloucestershire, England. I'm just trying to find my way around all this! I'm researching the Shiel or Shield family from Northumberland. One branch migrated to London and another to the South Island of New Zealand. Regards to you all, Prunella

    Hi Prunella,

I'm new to this site too, but just saw that you were looking for Shields - one branch in London>New Zealand. A few years back I helped a friend with their search for Murley in London and found that a John Shields married Rebecca Murley in Dunedin, S.Is. New Zealand in the 1860's (if my memory serves me well). The Shields had been in Tasmania, Australia, before coming to N.Z. Check out the Dunedin (NZ)city council cemeteries online and you'll find a lot of Shields interred there. Some of the family moved north to Timaru and settled there. If you think this may be the same family, let me know, and I'll hunt my notes out. Regards, Gracey.

    Hello Prunella

There are a few families of Shiel who live in and around Seahouses, a small fishing village on the Northumbrian coast. They have several boats and take tourists around the Farne Islands when not fishing. I think they have lived in the area since about mid 1800s. Hope this is of interest.
