I'm researching the family names of Etchells, Drennan, Harrison, Arcus, Demeza, Bancroft, Labone, Candelet. I have traced back my male family line to the marriage of George Etchells and Grace Sydall on 14 Dec 1769 with more tentative connection to John Etchels (sic) born about 1673 in Ashton under Lyne. I find it all too easy to get side-tracked by interesting off-shoots from the main family line. One such is the name Demeza and Rachel Demeza b: 1833 Bolton, who was married to my gt gt grandfather Gervase Etchells in 1856, was descended from Sephardic Jews born in Portugal in the late 1600's. Quite how they were still there then - when the Portuguese expulsions began in 1497 - is anyones guess!
The most important piece of advice I would give anyone starting their family history is to adopt a good filing system and ensure that their records are meticulously kept. It's all too easy to write something down on a piece of paper and lose it. I would recommend something like Microsoft OneNote to keep track of the bits and pieces, rough notes etc..
