Hello all. My name is Deborah Orton from Innisfil, Ontario Canada, and I am the daughter of Derek Orton, formerly of Wyke, Bradford, Yorkshire, England. This year my father will be 75 (born Oct 23, 1933 to William Henry Orton and Beatrice Ough) and as a special birthday gift (for he has always wanted to know) I have undertaken to do the Orton family tree.
My dad's brothers are Arthur Edwin Orton, born ~1922, lived in Romney UK, died a couple of years ago, and Gerald Orton, born ~1923, emigrated to Dundas, Ontario Canada after WW2. My father lived with him and his wife Bonnie Brown when he came to Canada at the age of 17. His mother sent him to Canada for safekeeping to preempt him joining the RAF during WW2.
I have been looking at some of the information that they let you see without the subscription, and there is a William Riley who has posted the family tree of Reeve who is relatively (no pun intended) closely related to my father ~ my fathers aunt was Lovinia Orton who married Percy George Reeve. Would love to get hold of him somehow without having to subscribe (tight budget). I have a birth certificate for William Henry Orton, born of William Henry Orton and Elizabeth Shackleton, an Arnold Orton, and a birth certificate for a William Henry born of William Orton and Selina Chaplin, but I don't have any information concerning marriages and so on.
My fathers family has resided for the most part in Yorkshire England, in the Bradford, Leeds Bingley area ( I have a number of plot certificates for the Bingley Cemetary), and my grandmother Beatrice Ough's family resided predominantly in Wakefield. I have some information concerning the Ough family if anyone is looking or can help fill in some details. She had sisters Olive, Ivy, brothers Willie and a Norman and a Frank, but I don't know if they were brothers or in-laws, or if the sisters were in-laws. I have a family photo that shows a Ruby, a Frank, and a number of others, but they are noted by first names and relationships, not last names (i.e. Frank's second wife, and so on.)
I have been enjoying looking into this family tree thing, it is very interesting, and would enjoy hearing from anyone that is looking or has anything that they can share.
I would even be interested in anyone that knows anything historical about Bingley, Wakefield, Leeds, or if there is anyone that knows anything about an old tavern in Bingley I believe called the Barley Mow. My fathers great grandfather was the Publican/Landlord of the Barley Mow, but beyond that, I don't know anything. What I cannot find with details before my father's birthday, I would love to be able to make up for with local color and history.
Also, there is a mystery relative, believed to be an Arnold Orton (an uncle or a great uncle of my father's) that went to Australia in the late 1800's I believe, last heard from with a letter sent from Alice Springs in the heart of the Red Center if I understand correctly.
That's it for my introduction ~ looking for Orton's (direct descent line), Shackletons a/o Dec 1861 (marriage), Ough's a/o Dec 1922 (marriage), Hiltons a/o Jun 1907 (marriage), Meadwells a/o Dec 1876 (marriage), Coulton's a/o Dec 1896 (marriage), Wignalls a/o Mar 1916 (marriage), and Chaplins a/o pre 1841 (marriage) as well as Anderton's - two brothers I believe who married sisters Selina Orton and Florence Orton, daughters of William Henry Orton and Elizabeth Shackleton.
