Thread: Glad I found this site ...

Hi everyone



I've been trawling the 'net, and making visits to New Register House in Edinburgh for three years and more looking for family connections and have over 4,500 names in my tree now.



Only today, on my first post here, did I get some seriously encouraging information about an aunt ... my late father's twin sister ... who I never met and who the present generation knew little or nothing about. And it took less than three hours!!



I've used other sites without much luck, but on the other hand I've met a lot of helpful people, given what help I could, found 'new' cousins and caught up with old ones that I'd lost touch with over the years.



My family is predominantly Scottish, but any connections south of the border will now be sought through this site.

Being a fellow Scot, I have found the scotlandspeople website very good as you have probably also. I have only had one visit to New Register House in Edinburgh so far (can only go during the holidays) and found it very useful indeed. I am amazed at the amount of information they have available to researchers. I must admit I expected it to be trawling through big dusty books. Shows you how much I know.

Sorry, but there're no Clark folk in my tree ... NOT YET ANYWAY!!!



New Register House in Edinburgh is a fantastic research source with most of the information now available on their computerised system ... as well as in the big, dusty books!!



I suppose I'm lucky in that I live in Fife - an hour away from Edinburgh by train, only work 34 weeks of the year and so have lots of spare time to go there. I use their online facility as well to get any record that 'niggles' when I have to be at work but find it expensive - especially when I get a bit carried away and select a wrong record! I've also got free access to all the Fife Census records on microfilm from 1841-1901 though it does mean scrolling through them page by page, line by line.



New Register House is being totally refurbished at the moment but access isn't restricted. As from the the end of this month (April 2008) the cost of a full day search is actually being REDUCED from £17.00 to £10.00.



They still have restrictions on the 'age' of records you can print copies of and it's possible to search right up to the current year, though I did have to hold off for six months or so on one death record I was looking for. It takes time for the records to get from origination to Edinburgh then onto the system.



I can't believe how quickly results have come in on this site and I'm looking forward to progressing my research further with a bit of extra help from so many like-mined folk.

Excellent news about the price reduction for a day at New Register House. £10 for unlimited access to there records. You can soon ramp-up the credits on scotlandspeople. So provided your organised and know what your after (and you dont have a hang-over from the night before) you should get excellent value for you money.
