hi gillian and thanks very much for the look up nellies age sounded good and bradford, but im not sure if it could be her, as her parents were supposed to be born in ireland she was definately born in bradford. you see on her marriage lines she is ellen surridge, but on my fathers birth certificate she is ellen quigley.on her death certificate she is a surridge so what else can i think it says she was a spinster when she married my grandad, paulettex
Hi Paulette
On her marriage certificate who does she say is her father?
3/1875 Bradford T 9b 276 Richard Quigley marriage to Margaret Ann O'Donnell
Could the Irish connection be a generation back? In 1881 Margaret and her children are living with her parents John & Norah O'Donnell who were both born in Ireland.
There is also a possible Richard Quigley b Bradford (1842 which doesn't quite match) on 1851 & 1861 parents Christopher & Bridget both b Ireland
I think you already have the birth reference for Helen Surridge (which is the only possible birth in Bradford at around the right date for either Surridge or Quigley)- maybe you will have to buy the certificate to help solve the mystery
Gillian
hi gillian last night i looked this up, yes she was margaret married to richard, the reason for me looking was to see who the parents were and were they were born, like you say this could be right about there parents been born in ireland, but it is still leaving a nagging doubt that nellie for some reason could be a surridge, like i said it was my grandads marriage certificate that tells me his fathers name, but there are none of ellens parents on it,i have her sons birth certificate and her maiden name says quigley but her marriage which is dec 1922, at st josephs church bradford, it says she is surridge, and on her death certificate surridge again, i could get a copy of her birth certificate if i knew for sure what maiden name to ask for do you think we should try looking for ellen and nellie surridge born in bradford 1899 first can you help, and thanks very much gillian, from paulettex
Hi Paulette - I suppose it is possible she was born outside the marriage. There is definitely no Quigley born in Bradford at the right time or Helen/Ellen/Nellie Quigley anywhere at the right time. So you have to assume the Helen Surridge who I think Nanna found for you is a strong possibility especially as there are no Ellen/Nellie Surridges at the right time (birth Helen Surridge 3/1898 Bradford 9b 136).
If Ellen doesn't name a father on her marriage certificate it is highly likely she was illegitimate.
I can't find any Helen/Nellie/Ellen Surridge on 1901 so Helen Surridge and Nellie Quigley could be the same person.
So I don't think there is any other option but to buy the certificate!
Can't wait to see what it says!
Gillian
thanks gillian for helping, it seems to be a long story that isent going to end but i hope we can solve this problem with the two surnames, you are right in saying that nellie could of been born out of wedlock. yes the other helen surridge is another chance if you wouldent mind a look up for me, i dont want to put on you two much as you have been great with the help but all in your own time, paulettex
So complicated it's difficult to be clear!
The only possible birth reference found is that above ie -
Helen Surridge Bradford 9b 136 3/1898
Don't worry about my time - I love a good mystery! I have a theory as to who the father could be but best to wait until you've got the certificate!
Gillian
hi gillian thanks for your reply, before i send for the certificate. would you be able to tell me her parents names thanks paulettex
Hi Paulette
Unfortunately no way of knowing without the certificate - I would get it anyway but if you prefer you could ask them to check if the mother is called Margaret before paying the full amount
Good luck
Gillian
