Thread: What does this mean

Hi would anyone be able to tell me

what does an S with three lines going vertical through it mean because i find it alot on my family's grave stone's

It's IHS, ( Iota, Eta and Sigma.) the first three letters of Jesus in Greek, and that appears to be the usual meaning.



But in Latin it could be .Jesus Hominum Salvator – Jesus Saves Men.

The Crusaders used to sew this symbol on their clothes to mean In Hoc Signo. (Under this sign you will conquer).

Or It could mean In Hac Salus – here there is sanctuary.
