    Default Birth certificates pre 1911

I was about to order my grandfather's birth certificate, in order to find his mother's maiden name, when I read that maiden names are not included until 1911, and he was born in 1870.

I have found a marriage entry in BMD, which must refer to his parents, as place, time, christian names and everything are right , but there are four names on the list altogether.

I don't think I dare pair them up to suit myself, dare I ? This is a loose end - well, a beginning really - that has been niggling at me for a long time, and it's time to deal with it, I think.

    What would you do ?

Any suggestions about other means of finding this information ?

    Thanks,

    anny.

    Hi Anny

Lol seen this after i left chat with you

Mothers maiden name isn't on the INDEXES until 1911..but it wil be on the birth cert

as for the marriages.. there are 4 people on each page...so unless say both females are the same name i.e. Mary......IF you know his mums forename...and that name appears on the marriage index..it will probably be that person you know what i mean???

If this post dont clarify what you need...post the info you have and it MAY solve it...without having to pay for certs!

    Hi Loz,

Thanks for putting me straight about the certificates - I shoud read things more carefully.

About the marriage entry, you're right, they probably are the right people, too much of a coincidence otherwise ........... but is ' probably ' good enough , do you think ?

I'll send for the certificate, but what I'm trying to find out is whether 'my' James Major is the one who married at the Lexden district in June 1856, and if so did he marry Eliza Godfrey?

    Thanks again,

    anny.

    Hi Anny

The only way to "confirm" is by certificate BUT based on what you have wrote....

Marriage Jun 1856 to Eliza Godfrey...

    1851 Census Brightlingsea, Essex

Mary Godfrey 54 Head Marr Mariners wife

    James 28 Son Mariner

    Eliza 15 VISITOR

    1841 Census Brighlingsea, Essex

    James Godfrey 40 Mariner

    Mary 50

    James 18

    Joseph 15

    Eliza 6

    James 70

    John D 35

The age and area for Eliza Godfrey match

James Major is on 1861 with Eliza then 1871 to 1891 he is onboard a vessel and is a Master.

Eliza is listed as a Married Mariners wife on these census with her children including Joseph born 1870

on 1901 James & Eliza are together with James being a Retired Mariner

I would hazard a guess that these are the people you are looking for....

Perhaps buying the Birth Certificate for your grandfather as this would confirm Mothers maiden name ?!? that could then "prove" the correct wedding

    Good Luck!

Well, Lozzie, you found more in the censuses ( ? ) than I did, bless you. Guess I'm not very good at looking things up. What clinches it for me now is the fact that both families were mariners. They all were, on my mother's side, and Eliza's son Joseph would be my grandfather. He grew up to become a master mariner, too. I was born in his house in Brightlingsea.

Yes, I'll send for the certificate, and I'll let you know what it says.

Lozzie, thank you so much !
