    Default PR's for Weston/Hitchin Hertfordshire

Would anyone know if there are any C/Ds or M/Fiche available for the Parish of Weston (near Hitchin) Hertfordshire.

I am trying to locate a birth Index number for my wifes grandfather, born in Walsworth, about 1887/88. His father was James william Ellis, mother was Mary Ann Ellis. Grandparents were Joseph and Mary Ellis.

My searches for BMDs in Hertfordshire have so far met with little or no results. There doesn't appear to be a Family History society there. No Council offices where certificates can be purchased. Not having much luck at all.

Any help whatsoever would be appreciated. .... Jimbo ... West OZ.

Hi Jimbo - better to leave parish registers for pre-1837 records and use ordinary BMD indexes & census information for later dates.

If your wife does not know her grandfathers name does she know who he married?

Thank's Gillian. The man in question is "Joseph Ellis," Since my initial enquiries some months back. I have found more details on him from army Book 358. (These books appear to be held by Regimental Museums) It says he was born in Walsworth, Hertford. (possibly 1888) I believe Walsworth is now part of Weston or Hitchin.

It is the post 1837 records I am looking for. The 1891 census for Weston in the district of Hitchin. RG12/1106/84/p17 shows them living at Damask Green, Weston. Joseph is shown at the bottom of the list of Ellis. Aged 3, a checkers mark makes look like a 5.

This ancestor has given us the run-around for 8 years. We are hoping now that we have him 'check-mate.'

I have already purchased one wrong certificate for him. So, now want to make sure I have the Index number for him.

    Best regards ...Jimbo.

    Hi Jimbo

    On freebmd the following births:

Joseph Ellis Sep Qtr 1887 Vol 3a Page 469

Joseph Ellis Jun Qtr 1888 Vol 31 Page 502

As you know his parents....when you apply for the birth certificate you can stipluate "only supply cert if parents are....."

I would hazard a guess that the Sep 1887 birth is him

    Good Luck

Hi everyone. I am pleased to inform you that the search/ investigation for my wife's grandfather, has been solved. Albeit, a couple of skeletons remain hidden regarding his Army carrear. I purchased the second birth certificate last week, & the mystery fell into place.

He was born on 1st April, 1888. William Rd, Walsworth, Hitchin, Herts. That is four years of frustration ended.

I would like to thank all of you that helped me in solving this problem. Thank you one and all. God Bless.
