Thread: Hertfordshire birth cert

Could anyone tell me how to get a birth certificate for wife's grandfather born in Walsworth, Hitchin, Hertfordshire. I only have the free BMD reference number 3a 469 Sept qtr, 1887. I tried Nat Archives Index but they refer you to Ancestory.com who require you to join ancestory. Is there no place in Hitchin or hertford, where one can purchase a birth certificate ?
