Thread: whats the occupation in this census please

hi there, could someone please have a look at this census (link below) and tell me what john carters occupation is....it looks like it says fun maker stocker!! I am sure I need glasses.

Its Gunmaker Stocker. its the wooden part at the end of a gun.



in the old days they consisted of 3 parts. Lock, Stock, and Barrel. each part was made by a different craftsman, and then assembled by other people.



Your ancestor was either making the stocks or fitting them to the guns.

Purely out of interest, my Gt Grandfather, James John Wescott Oldfield was a gun action filer. It was his job to take the various parts of the gun lock and assemble them into a working lock. The various parts would have to be carefully filed to make a smoothly working action.



I have a photograph of him, taken in Philadelphia, when he was on one of his working visits to America. He normally worked in Birmingham, England. Thats why I am brummieboy.

not sure whereabouts my ancestor lived, but wouldnt it be great if our chappies knew eachother....I love thouse "its a small world" things!!! K
