    Default Funeral Anouncements

    Hello,

Does anyone know of anyway to find information on Funerals.

Looking for some info re a funeral in Notts in 1932

Funeral took place of Hugh Wilson Travers at Wilford Hill West Bridgford Notts. Wednesday 2nd March 1932.

Wondered if there was any records held of who attended the funeral, or more importantly family members. Trying to find names of wife (widow) and his 2 sons. It would appear wife could have been Elizabeth Travers but I can not find marriage of Hugh Wilson Travers to anyone called Elizabeth from 1915 - 1932. It would have been his 2nd Marriage so not sure if back then they divorced or just lived as man and wife if 2nd marriage etc.

    Thanks

A good source of information is local newspapers-possibly the Nottingham Evening post for death and date of funeral announcement. I doubt there would be a funeral report in the post, you would probably need a weekly local newspaper for that.

As Wilford Hill is a crematorium, there may not be a detailed funeral report

There may also a week or so after the funeral a "Thankyou" in the newspaper, which would probably be from the family.

Have you the death certificate for Hugh -often it is wife or children who notify the death.

You say Hugh had been married before - do you have a death reg for his first wife?

One of my ancestors lived as husband/wife for 17 years before the first wife died -and then they married.

Thanks for the info very helpful.

Yeah we have Hugh's death cert and under name of the informant it says. P A Travers SON present at time of death.

Hugh married Emily Alice Webster back in 1901 in Fulham and they had 4 children my Grandfather being 1 of them. Family mystery he left but came back for a while then left again. He died in 1932 and Alice (emily) didn't die til 1957 she lived with her 2 daughters in Stanmore.

We were wondering if we could find out this new wife or PA travers (son) to try and work out the missing years.

I will speak to Notts library and see if they can help. We do have a small funeral notice which says he was interned at Wilford Hill so I am assuming it was both a Crem and a Cemetery back then ???

    Thanks again for the advice

What address did he die at?

Electoral rolls would be a source of information for who else was in the household

(unless of course he died in hospital)

... and the Southern cemetery (and crem) is Wilford Hill -I just associate it with it being the crem!

It may be worth contacting them to see what records they hold.

    Harryman,

Thanks he died at 19 Chasworth Road, West Bridgford, Basford, Notts. Unable to locate info on PA Travers (SON) so am assuming that he was under the age of Voting etc. Which if I am right in my thoughts he would have been a child and therefore I assume the same reason why he has not signed the cert to say informed of death, rather than just being present ??

Thanks again for info will look into contacting Wilford Hill etc.

Have you looked at electoral roll for year he died -and a few years before?

I know P A Travers wouldn't be on the roll if he was under 21, but wondered what Hugh's "wife" was down as. If Hugh had never divorced Alice Emily and so was living as husband /wife with P.A.Travers mother, then it is possible the new "wife" was on the electoral poll using a name other than Travers -people often told the truth on electoral rolls! It is a possibility that P.A.Travers birth was registered in a different surname.

Hope I'm not making things too complicated!

Of course, there is also the possibility that even if Hugh and ? were not married, P.A.'s birth could have been reg as Travers if Hugh was present at the registration.

Maybe it would be worth getting the electoral roll for this address for a few years after his death -maybe P.A. was still at the address when he "came of age"?

I do a lot of research in Derbys, but occasionally do some in Nottingham -I live on the border of the 2 counties. keep posting back here with anything you find and if you have not made much progress in 2-3 weeks I will try and do a look up for you.

    Hi Harryman,

We called Notts Library and they checked Elec Roll and it would appear that in 1932-1934 Elizabeth Travers was living there, I assume with the 2 boys, in 1934 she was joined by a Sarah Thompson ??

I have a funny feeling that PA Travers and his brother were born in Scotland and he was known to be working in Glasgow for 5 years in the mid 1920's I think he was there from about 1923-1928 (ish) so possible they were born up there.

I did find a marriage cert for a Hugh Travers and an Elizabeth New in Manchester in q4 1921 but she was 20 years his junior and he wasn't down as Hugh Wilson Travers which he seems to have been down as for everything else so was unsure about that being him. But perhaps this was down to the fact he wasn't divorced, His first wives Death Cert has her down as his Widow so I am assuming they did not divorce ??

Thanks for all your help, maybe will try and get Elec Roll for 1934-1940 ish and she what happened at that address, hard though when relying on Library staff to check for us they aren't all keen to help.

    Regards A xx
