Hi I now have a birth cert for Hilda and her brother

Jacob, and I was lucky enough that i got Jacob right

first time! So I will list the information in the

columns below.....

Name if any- Jacob

Sex- Boy

Name and surname of father- Sam Nathan Wolitzsky

Name of mother- Kate WOlitzsky formerly Nabarro

Occ. of father- Cloth cap maker

Informant- Kate Wolitzsky mother, 88 Nichols Square

When registered- 10 November 1906.





HILDAS BIRTH CERT-



Reg dist- West Ham

Sub dist- North Leyton

When & where born- 15th December, 6 william street

m.d.

Name if any- Hilda Wolitzsky

Sex- Girl

Name of father- Samuel Wolitzsky nathan

Mother- Kate Nathan formerly Jacobs

Occ of father- Cap Machinist

Informant- Kate Nathan mother, 6 william street

When registered- 8th February 1909





THINGS TO NOTE, THAT I HAVE NOTICED!



-Samuels name appears differently on both certs

-On Jacobs cert both same and kate are using the

surname wolitzsky

- By the time Hilda is born, the names have changed???

- On Hildas cert Kate has dropped the nathan, and she

is not using nabarro as her maidenname.

- Both children are registered by their mother, isn't

this unusual?? COuld it signify an affair???

- The births are registered quite a while after the

event is this normal?



WHAT DOES THIS TELL US



In 1906 kate was a wolitzsky, so was samuel,

suggesting they were married (although may not have

been)



In 1908, both kate and samuel were nathan, although

samuel is now using wolitzsky as a middle name and

Hilda is given it as a middle name.



In 1908 Kate is formerly Jacobs, so was she born

NABARRO, had Jacob then married a JACOBS and had Hilda

after that. BUT, both children were with Samuel, with

whom she was having an affair??? JUST THINKING OUT LOUD!



Anyway, that is the update, can anyone help to shed

any light!!

As the father is named and the same on both birth certificates I think you have to assume that he was indeed the father. The most likely reason for adopting Nathan as a surname is that it sounded more English and was therefore easier. It was common for immigrant families to anglicise their names.

Kate's names could mean that she was married before or that her mother married again. You can only really find out by continuing to search for marriages.

It may be, as you said Kirstie that Kate and Samuel weren't married to each other, the plot thickens!

I have seen these records, however.......



The Jacobs/Nathan marriage in 1901 I discounted, because Kate wouldnt have been Nathan in 1901. I say this because Nathan was Samuels name, the chap she had her children with.



The samuel wolitzsky census, I have this hunch that this is my samuel and that he and kate had an affair. The samuel in the census died in 1918 and in the jewish chronicle it says he had one child leah.



To add, I have founda death today for a Jack Smyth, born 6 October 1906 died July 1996. I know that my Hilda has a borther called Jacob Wolitzsky. My aunt tells me that he changed his name to Jack Smyth. He was fostered by a lady called Dora, so was Hilda. I wonder if this death is my Jack and the DOBs match and I know my Jacob W was known as Jack Smyth.

how about Samuel Wolitzsky marrying Hannah Goschowsky in 1893, leaving her and then getting together with my Kate surname unknown! They have children Hilda and Jacob, but aren;t married and the children are fostered. Samuel then dies in 1918 and becuase he is still technicale married to hannah the notice in the jewish Chron says husband on Hannah father of only child leah.....because after all you wouldnt advertise the fact that you went off and had children out of wedlock then fostered them out would you??? especiall ynot in the jewish chron!!! This is the conspiracy theorist side of me talking....need to prove somethings now!!!

Sorry I have nothing to add to you saga, but just had to say how much it is like my own family saga which I am also struggling to piece together. After 45 years of searching for Grandfathers sister as he was abandoned as a 3 year old. It turns out that his parents Hugh Wilson Travers and Alice Emily (Emily Alice/Alicia Emily Webster) had 4 children in total stayed in touch with 3 but left Grandad. We can not trace the births of the 2 daughters at all, and it looks like they changed their names regulalry becasue they were in the Theatre Business. Hugh also appears to have remarried or not in the 1920'ds and fathered 2 more sons, identities unknow at present.



I am sure you will get there in the end, stay positive and patient !! Fingers crossed for you. I am taking a break at the moment as I was bog eyed and finding nothing . I will get back on it soon though.
