Hi guys, I now have a response from my great aunt!! The info has baffled me somewhat so i am going to list what she has told me, in the hope someone will help me (again) but that also by writing it, it may make more sense to me.
Right......
Hilda Wolitsky Nathan, born 15th December 1908, West Ham Leyton. (this confirms I have the right birth cert)
Hildas mother on birth cert, Kate Jacobs, and father Samuel Nathan, who has died before 1930.
My Aunt says that Hildas mother was called KATE NABARO, who went to live with them in 1940s and died when she was about 79. On Hildas birth cert Kate was formerly JACOBS.
Hilda had a brother JACK NATHAN, he changed his name to Smyth. Jack married someone called ELLA, and they had one son PETER, they lived around walthamstow.
HILDA and JACK, were bought up by a foster mother called DORA, my aunt knows nothing else about DORA or the reasons why. ALthough she says Jack changed his name to Smyth, and on Hilda and Lewis Taylors marriage cert one of the witnesses is D Smyth, so was Dora who was Hilda and Jack foster mother called Dora Smyth????
Nothing is known of Hildas Dad SAMUEL NATHAN, or where the WOLITSKY comes from.
Hilda Nathan married LEWIS TAYLOR. Hilda remarried someone with the surname HOWLETT, she died 1994. My aunt says (quote) 50s-60s when I saw any of them (about her cousins) when Mum and Dad divorced" SO I know Hilda Nathan and Lewis Taylor divorced at some point after a long time married.
Hilda and Lewis lived with Lewis Dad and step mum at LARANKA ROAD, EDMONTON. for a while.
Lewis and Hildas children PEGGY (who has written to me, a asked if she was actually named peggy, but she doesnt say, I am assuming she is margaret?), born 1931, Leslie Lewis 1934, Derek 1936.
My aunt says (quote( "my mum did go into 'service' to work for a tailor in clapham common when she was about 15 years old" Hilda would have been 15 in 1923, so not the war....what does service mean I wonder, does she does mean work!
Kate, NABARO/JACOBS- lived in leytonstone.
So, I will of course start trawling......but again any tips or info you can help with I would be most grateful. I did ask her about the jewish polish bit, all she says is....
" I cannot believe Nanny Hilda was ashamed of being polish origin as she did not know anything about this until she remarried and sent for her birth cert. It does have indeed a polish name as you say and she thought it was the wrong one a sent it back"
Thank you guys
Kirstie
