Thread: Need Help with McClelland

Ok you lot out there - REALLY do need help on this one:



1871 Census



Robert J Mc Clelland 41, Pensioner, Sergeant, Retired born Ireland

Ellen 40 born Oxford

Caroline E 9 born Ilsey

Harriet A 7 born Aldershot

living in 46 ..ormfield Road, Plumstead



I have his army record



Robert John McClelland (spelt with & without a gap) married Ellen Carr Feb 1865

He was previously married in Jun 1852 to a Harriet Ackley who died in 1864 just after giving birth to yet another daughter (she had a few but all died)



My problem:



I cannot find a birth for this Caroline nor anything after this census (or before for either wife) until Caroline marries in Mar 1885 in Bermondsey, Southwark - where were they???



I am not sure, if Caroline is Harriet's daughter or whether she was born to Ellen before she & Robert married



ANY help would be really appreciated - I have certificates (right & wrong) for this family, coming out of my ears

Thank you for looking - I have seen this but:



Everything I have says Robert was from Ireland (army records etc, etc) & after the Royal Artillery, he was a carpenter



Elizabeth ? & Hilsea? I have trapsed thro all the Hilsea records for a birth & zilch (just in case it was Hilsea rather than Ilsey - sorry should have said) - I cant get to Berks/Newbury to go thro theirs so ??????



If I could just find the birth cert, it would answer sooooooo many questions.........

I think it has to be them - right area, names (Caroline Elizabeth?) ages, Robert's place of birth wrong but the others right.

Agree though need a birth certificate
