Thread: Margaret Jane Nicholl Forbes

This is really doing my head in (sorry I am a Grandma not my usual way to phrase things)

This lady born 19th Feb 1851 Liverpool Farher James Nicholl surname Forbes Mother Jane.

1851 census Jane Forbes lives Liverpool with 1 mth old Margaret Jane Forbes. Mother born Scotland she was aged 19.



1851 census James nicholl Forbes was a patient in Westminster St John the evangelist.

1861 census James Nichol Forbes Lives as a lodger in a house in Westminster Middlesex master mariner also at that address Jane Forbes age 29 born Glasgow. No child where is Margaret Jane Nicholl?.



She appears next 11th April 1868 she married Robert Neild St Mary edge hill Liverpool.

Where was she from when she was 1 mtn old?.



1871 census lived Leigh Lancashire wife of Robert Neild and mother.



1881 census lived Toft St Liverpool ship stewardess with her children status married house keeper Elizabeth Dootson (also lived with them in Leigh) so I have the right person.

2nd April 1881 at the same address John Percival Mann born to Margaret nee Forbes person present at the birth Eliz Dootson. 1891 census lives Liverpool as Margaret Mann wife of John Mann ship steward born Bradford her Children (neild) as brother and sister in law. Cant find marriage of margaret to John Mann.

What is going on? did she ever marry John Mann or was she still Married to Robert Neild? and where was she from 1mth old to getting married 1868?.



Has anybody any ideas?

Many thanks for looking this up, this is him but I wonder what happened to his first marriage I thought divorce was rare then, Margaret was still alive 1895 when she was on John Mann death certificate as his widow. Even though I can not find a marriage.

The more I learn about family research the more I realise how little know. I thought it would be so straight foreward once you traced who you were looking for.



Is it just our family or is it the norm to find people led such complicated lives, Robert Neild lived as a lodger 1881 with Mary Woodward widow of Samuel who died 1873.



Yet, she has two children after he died, Thomas born 1883 and Ellen born 1887.

She and Robert Neild married 1893. Later Ellen Woodward was known as Ellen Nield.



I still dont know about Margaret who was a relation of my Husbands trouble is I get so involved with other people I forget about the one I am looking at.

No, it's not just your family who led complicated lives. My g.grandfather Tom Armitage married and had a son, a few years later his wife left him, and her son, to go and live with another man, a few years on Tom met my g.grandmother Mary Hargreaves and they set up home together, and went on to have 5 children who all had the surname Hargreaves and middle name Armitage. Tom and Mary did eventually marry but not until their children were all adults and Mary and Tom were in their 70's. This family led me a merry dance for a good while as, my grandad's name was Hargreaves therefore I had been searching the census returns for this name only to find that although Mary wasn't married to Tom she had led the enumerator to believe they were married and therefore been recorded on the census as Armitage.



I will take another look at the 1861 census for your Margaret, so fingers crossed.

Many thanks for looking this up. Yes I did know about the census info she is also on the 1891 census as Margaret Mann.

However, 1881 she was Margaret Neild 8 Toft St Liverpool status married I found her Marriage to Robert Neild and they Lived Leigh Lancs 1871 census between 1871-1881 she leaves Robert and moves to Liverpool along with the children and Elizabeth Dootson now housekeeper, Margaret is shown as a ship stewardess.



That was 1st April 1881, 2nd April 1881 John Percival Mann was born at 8 Toft St mother

margaret nee Forbes (Margaret Jane Nicholl Forbes married Robert Neild)

Father John Mann ship steward also at the birth Elizabeth Dootson.



Now I know why I could not find a marriage for John Mann to Margaret she was already married. Robert her husband still alive living with a widow who he later marries.



All I can find out about John Mann is that he was born Bradford yorkshire he was a ship steward and died Liverpool 1895 Margaret is down as his widow.



There were only 2 John Mann I could find that fit because he died 22nd June 1895 age 43 he would have been born 23june1851-21stjune1852 that narrowed to 1 I have his birth certificate born 19/8/1851 father George mason mother Sarah Stead known as sally on census. Just wish I had some confirmation I have the right one.

Anybody have any idea s how I can find out, He and Margaret do not appear to have married.

Sorry, the info re John Mann father is George Mann he was a stone mason the way I put it looks as though he was George Mason.
