    Default marriage cert

I recieved marriage cert in post this morning and need some help on it.

Under condition bit on both parties it says Previous marriages dissolved does this mean they divorced their ex husband and ex wife or what?

and then Under the name and surname bit for the lady it has her name and underneath it it says named changed by deed poll. This was her name from her married name 1st marriage of which I have copy of that cert. (Her 1st husband didnt die whilest they still married)

I am confussed on this cos never come across. So any help I would be grateful, Thank you

    Hi Max,

A dissolved marriage might be by agreement from both parties, not exactly a divorce, but a seperation which became permanent for some reason, long term illness or incapacity, perhaps?

Did the lady revert to her maiden name,or take the 1st;husbands name by deed poll?

Just my thinking, probably confuse matters further.

    Good luck,

    Derrick.

Hi Derrick, Thank you, I understand the 1st bit about the dissolved marriage.

It looks like the lady took 1st husbands name by deed poll rather than using her maiden name.

Another question (me being dim possibly) Why keep your husbands surname by deed poll for next marriage and not maiden name, or is this because of the reason why marriage dissolved (they didnt divorce or husband 1 died).

    Just curious know.

    Hi,

A dissolved marriage was only as a result of divorce if seen written on a second marriage certificate. Very uncommon in the 19th century due to expense and social stigma, but became more common in the 20th. With an unofficially dissolved marriage which came about simply by agreement of the partners (which happened quite often), neither partner was free to marry again *legally* until one of them died. They remained married "until death do us part" or an annullment (something else again) or a divorce took place and could be proven so at the second marriage. This site is useful for some of the more unusual things one finds on marriage certs

One of the reasons for women changing their names to their first husband's by deed poll was/is for financial and convenience reasons. I did just that when I divorced because it was too much hassle to go back to my maiden name for such things as NIns numbers, insurances, bank accounts, annuities, etc. However, I did not want to be known as Mrs or more recently, Ms ...That was many years ago but if I ever married again, I would marry with my first husband's surname. Not likely now, I am too old.

    Regards

    Victoria
