    Default Culloden's/Stemmerman's

My G Grandma was Minnie Stemmerman b1890 in Leeds, she married Albert Edward Parker born b1867 in Leeds...Albert died 1931.

After trawling the cenus records, I'm now wondering if Minnie Stemmerman is infact Minnie Culloden b1895 in Leeds?? It seems that Culloden family members have changed names through the years?? Here's an example of what I mean....

Mary A. Culloden b1852 in Leeds - Found birth in June 1852

Martha Culloden b1871 in Leeds - Found a Stemmerman in 1871 but no Culloden

William Culloden b1869 in Leeds - Found a Stemmerman in 1868 but no Culloden

In the 1891 census - Henry Culloden is listed as head of the family, aged 36, an Ironmongers Assistant, his son is listed as William Stemmerman, aged 21, his daur is listed as Martha A Pollard, aged 19, his daur in law is listed as Alice Stemmerman, aged 18 & Minnie Stemmerman is listed as Henry's granddaughter aged 4 months.

I think Henry's father is listed as John Culloden b1822 in the 1861 census, a Tinner from Ireland, married to Grace Dickinson b1827 in Leeds.

I have found in the YKS Marriage indexes...John & Grace's marriage 1848 at St. Peters in Leeds. There's a Martha A. Stemmerman listed as marrying Henry Pollard, a William Stemmerman married Alice Bedford in 1890 in Leeds, & a Martha A. Stemmerman married Ackroyd Hodgson 1893 in leeds.

I have a Martha A Stemmerman b1871 in Leeds & a William Stemmerman b1868 in Leeds - father listed as Henry Culloden. John Culloden & Grace Dickinson have a daur Martha A. Culloden, listed in 1881 census, aged 10. But, there's no birth registered for a Martha A Culloden in 1871, but there is for Martha A Stemmerman?

This probably makes no sense to anyone & I'm sure you can tell how confused I am... Basically, I don't know how the Culloden's & Stemmerman's are connected??

I would be extremely grateful for any help at all on this??! If you need anymore info, I've got some...

    Regards

I've just done abit more digging & I'm now wondering if Henry Culloden b1854 met Mary Stemmerman & had two children - William Stemmerman b1870 & Martha Stemmerman b1873. I have found a marriage listing for Henry Culloden in Dec 1882 in Bradford, wife listed as Mary Stemmerman or Mary Ann Giblin? If it was Mary Stemmerman, this would explain William & Martha not having the Culloden surname. William married Alice Bedford 1890 in Leeds & they had a daur Minnie Stemmerson b1890 in Leeds....my g grandma! Obviously, this is all theory & I haven't confirmed anything yet but it seems a more logical explanation??

    Hi Waks

I agree. Henry Culloden married Mary Stemmerman in 1882. She already had (at least) 2 children, William & Martha - Henry could have been the father but more likely she had been married before (you may need a birth certificate to be sure). In 1881 they are all living together with Henry's family & listed as Cullodens. In 1891 the surnames are correct for Minnie & her mother but father William is still down as Culloden. In 1901 Minnie is with her grandparents & listed as a Culloden. I think father William had probably died by this time (death William Stemmerman Dec 1897 age 27 Leeds 9b 283)

Congratulations on sorting that lot out!

    Gillian

Thanks for that Gillian....I've got to say, after all the family searching I've done, this lot have been the most irritatingly, difficult to unravel - it turns out that William & Martha's mum Mary, was previously married to a Frederick Stemmerman, originally from Bermondsey, Surrey.

I also want to say a massive HUGE thank you to a lady called Joan from Cumbria, who has been the biggest help ever!!

    Right..........who's next??
