Default Edward Edds Ross & Co.

    Hi all,

I'm looking for the parents/siblings/family of Edward Edds Ross born c.1846 in Woolwich, Kent. He married Amelia Hall in 1871, Woolwich, and most of their children's births seem to be registered with the name Hall rather than Ross (even after their marriage). The family's 1881 census is below, but I would like the other censuses preceding and succeeding it. Edward died in 1887.

    1881 - 2 High Street, Woolwich, Kent
    ROSS/Edward/Head/M/M/35/Drill Instructor/Kent - Woolwich
    ROSS/Amelia/Wife/M/F/34/Wife/Kent - Shorters Hill
    ROSS/Edward/Son/U/M/12/Scholar/Kent - Plumstead
    ROSS/Dé Freitas/Son/U/M/10/Scholar/Kent - Plumstead
    ROSS/Julia/Dau/U/F/6/Scholar/Kent - Plumstead
    ROSS/Victor/Son/U/M/4/Scholar/Kent - Plumstead
    ROSS/Louisa/Dau/U/F/2/Kent - Chatham
    ROSS/Alice/Dau/U/F/1/Kent - Chatham
    ROSS/Edith/Dau/U/F/7m/Kent - Woolwich

    Hi Baz,
I cannot find a birth for Edward Edds Ross. I have a death age 41 and a burial at Plumstead St. Margaret kent on 22nd Oct 1887.
There is a baptism for a martha ross at Woolwich St Mary Magdalene 14 Sept 1851, parents Edward Ross and sarah who live at No 6 Thomas St Woolwich. Father is a Corporal in the Royal Marines and I thought perhaps that if this is Edward Edds Ross' sister then his birth might have been abroad. It may be on FMP.

How sure are you about his year of birth I too have looked for a birth and cannot find anything. There are a few Edward Ross's but none that appear to match your Edward's year of birth. What does the Edds stand for? . Do you think the family were abroad for some of the time? Likewise the census - the only one that I can find is the 1881 - which you have got. It may be wortwhile getting the marriage cert as it will list fathers name and occupation which will be a start.

Do you have his marriage cert Jan Feb Mar 1871 Woolwich London Edward Eddes Ross 1d , 800.
This will give fathers name and occ,

If- his father was Edward Ross then there is one such chap on HMS Terpsichore in 1861 census an able seaman aged 42, married(no wife/family with him) born Plumstead RG9/4479/6/9.
Cannot find wife Sarah and kids on 1861(just taking wife as Sarah from info on Martha's baptism)
There is a christening of an Edward Ross at St Nicholas Plumstead 25th jan 1818 parents Robert Ross and Martha.
Unfortunately the Plumstead St Nicholas or St Margaret are not on line except for a handful on A*******Y. They are held at the L M. A.
They may be on FMP but I had a brief search and it came up with nothing.
Maybe someone with a full sub for FMP will have a look for you.

There is an Edward Ross b. Lancs 1846 but he died 1904.

Have you got Amelia and children 1891?

    RG12/541 75 26

Been transcribed as wisdom on one site, stupid error as this is the surname of the family before and its says Ross on the sheet, have put a correction in

    1871
    RG10 792 21 35 I think in Woolwich
In Woolwich with mother Amelia Brown, Amelia Hall married, gson to Amelia Brown Edward and George

Thanks for all the suggestions and looking for me, guys!
Elaine, can you please post the details of those two censuses here - I don't have them.

Also, I looked for the birth registrations of his children - none registered under Ross, all under Hall (as I mentioned in my opening post). This got me thinking, and lo and behold, a search for Edward Edds Hall brings up a birth registration in 1846 in Greenwich! This explains why Amelia, married, in 1871 is still enumerated as Hall.

So, I guess a search of those earlier years for Edward Edds Hall may be more fruitful....

    In this census 1871 RG10 792 21 35
Amelia Hall (nee Brown), is living with her mother Amelia Brown. She is listed as married with a son Edward b 1869 and George 6 months both born in Plumstead. States she ws born in Sydenham, Kent.

In this census RG11; Piece: 746; Folio: 96; Page: 10 She appears to have married Edward Ross and Edward is list as Ross b 1869 Plumstead, Kent, England

So we are looking for a marriage between a Brown and Hall around 1878 and a death for the husband around 1870.

    Civil Registration event: Marriage
    Name: BROWN, Amelia Susan
    Registration District: Greenwich
    County: London
    Year of Registration: 1867
    Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
    Spouse's name: HALL, Edward Eddes
Volume No: 1D Page No: 1088

    Researching the following families;
Kitchin & Sharpe, Cumberland, Canada, USA : Dixon, Lancashire, Westmorland, USA
Fell & Hanslow, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, USA Australia.
    Guess, Buckinghamshire : Meakins, Northamptonshire

    I found his birth:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
    Name: Edward Adds Hall
    Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1846
    Registration district: Greenwich
Inferred County: Greater London, Kent, London
    Volume: 5 Page: 274

I did nor find a death before 1871 for Edward Eddes/ Adds, nor the marriage of Edward Ross to Emilia Hall in 1871. Who died in 1887 Edward Ross or Edward E Hall ?

The only way forward is to purchase a birth cert for one of the children preferably George de Freitas Hall 1871.That will give father's name and occupation. You will then see if the father is Edward Adds Hall or Edward Eddes Ross and his occupation. If you purchase the Edward Hall born Greenwich cert it may not be the correct Edward.
It is either a case of two Edwards? or for some reason Edward Hall changed his name to Ross.
I too cannot find a death for an Edward Hall that fits.

Purchase of the marriage cert for Edward Hall and Amelia Brown would give you Edward's father and occ.
1851 has an Edward Hall , born 1846, son of George(born America) and Mary with siblings. In 1861 this family are in Plumstead RG9/410/12/27 but Edward not with them.Might he have been a sailor or?

If there were two Edwards that Amelia married/didn't marry then you will not know the birth date of the first one.
