    Default Charles HICKS born c1789/90 (possibly Kent)

    Dear members,

    I am trying to discover a baptism record for Charles HICKS born circa 1789/90 or possibly any apprentice/indenture records (not sure what sort of apprenticeships carpenters had at this time). I know he wasn't born in Middlesex (I assume Kent but don't know) but he did spent the majority of his life there.

    The information I have, working backwards, is:

    Burial: Charles HICKS - 27 January 1850 Poplar All Saints, age 59;
    Death cert: Charles HICKS - died 18 January 1850 Poplar (3 Cold Harbour), Ships joiner, informant Ann HICKS (present at death) of 3 Cold Harbour Poplar, registered 24th January 1850;
    1841 census: Charles HICKS - Cold Harbour Poplar, age 50, Carpenter, not born in county
    1831 parish return Poplar: HICKS Cha's - 32 Cottage Street, Carpenter
    Marriage: Charles HICKS (with Ann JACKSON), married 25 August 1822 Greenwich St Alfege, Bachelor, both OTP, by banns, both signed in the presence of Mary JACKSON (mark) and [looks like] somebody SMITH

    Charles and Ann had 12 children between 1823 and 1842 all born in Poplar.

    Any help or pointers gratefully received.

    Regards

    Peter

    Janet,
    Thanks. I have seen that tree but the assertion that he was born in Poplar must be wrong. Poplar is in Middlesex and the 1841 census says he wasn't born in Middlesex.

    Hi again
    just had a look at the 1841 census, if you look in the column born in county, its neither a yes or no. Look at how the other entries are on the same page.
    It would depend on who was giving the information to the enumerator whether they knew where he was born or not.

    Janet,
    Thanks again. I believe it is a N. I know just about every other entry in that column are clear "Y" or "N" I think this one looks more like a "N" than a "Y". I accept that the enumerator may have got it wrong but then I can't find a baptism in Middlesex that matches (A***ry cover for Middlesex is pretty good). There are a few HICKS families in the area at the time and I have certainly browsed actual Poplar baptism pages for 1789/1790, without luck. Conversley the A***ry coverage of Kent is not so good.

    Pjm99, The census can record birth places incorrectly so never take them for being spot on..My Great Grandmother was born in Cornwall in 1854 and the only census that records her birth place correctly is 1861 1871 and 1911..
    1881 and 1891 really have it wrong as one has her born in France and the other Census in Devon..
