    Default Lancashire Electoral Rolls/Australian immigration

    Hi all,

I'm trying to track down one Greenwood Huddleston(e). I have his marriage certificate from 4 Sep 1881 at St. Philip's in Manchester (Salford) and the birth certificate for his first child on 3 Mar 1887 in Brunswick, Victoria, Australia. His death certificate implies that he arrived in Oz around the time of his daughter's birth, i.e. 1887, though I cannot find him or his wife, Hannah, arriving in any port.

I am hoping someone has access to electoral rolls or directories for Manchester or Lancashire in the 1880s, to try and pinpoint when he headed Down Under. His occupation was carter.

Also, if anybody can track their immigration down, I would be eternally grateful!

    Cheers,

    Bazza

That death is the man himself! For some reason he took the first name John in the late 1880s - try and blend into the crowd more easily perhaps....

So he's in Oz by '86..... As St. Peters is in Sydney (Cooks River Ave is the one that leads to the International Airport), maybe he went there first.....

    More clues!

    Thanks again

    Baz

Just to clear things up Baz the Sands Directory has the address as Cooks River Rd..I did find a few later arrivals for Greenwood to Australia but not in the time frame you are searching for under those names. Another thought is that he came to Australia perhaps under the name of John? What other steps have you taken in order to find his arrival date and that of his wife?

Thanks. I've checked the Victorian immigration records at the PROV site, but I am now thinking that he may have sailed into Sydney. NSW only have good records for their assisted immigrants, so if he paid his own way, then I might have to trawl through some fiche to find him....
Have been looking under both John & Greenwood, and checking alternate Huddleston spellings and also Swinnerton, his wife's maiden name that he later adopted.

Yes I think you might need to trawl through the fiche in order to find your man..I am also of the opinion that he sailed into Sydney first and lived there for a short time before making the move to Victoria.

Hi Baz, I would also be searching for other variations of Hannah..My Great Grandmother was named Hannah but went by the name of Anna or Annie..Only official documents such as bdm certs and her Baptism record her under the name of Hannah..

Thanks to both of you. Noggin, I did have those census records already, but I appreciate it nonetheless.
Lady Marion, I found him in the Sand's for 1885 as well, though he's not there in '84....
    Narrowing it down further.
