Default Whatever happened to Elsie Marian Pitman 1876?

My GrandMother Elsie Marian Pitman was discharged, along with her daughter Edith Maud, from St Lukes workhouse, City Road London on 18/8/1920. That's the last trace I have of her. She was born to Herbert and Marion on 19/10/1876 in Camden, London. Her daughter's birth certificate has her as Marian Elsie Goodman (formerly Pitman) although I can find no record of her marriage to the father Thomas Frederick William Goodman. Her Daughter Edith was admitted to the Holborn Union Mitcham School late 1920 early 1921 as an orphan, homeless and illegitimate. Edith's parents are recorded as dead although her Father Thomas had returned from the Great War. Edith left Mitcham School in 1931. I can find no trace of Elsie Marian's death. She has also been referred to as Marie and Mary. If anyone can assist me in this I would be forever grateful.

I am not sure if any of our members can help with this one but you might need to contact London Metropolitan Archives as they hold the Workhouse records..They might be able to tell you what became of your Grandmother after she left St Lukes..

The only marriage I can find for a Thomas Frederick W Goodman is for the December Quarter of 1904 Edmonton 3a 756.. He married either Pitman Kate Tutton or Moggridge Madeline Esther.

Thank you so much The Lady Marion for coming back to me so quickly. Your info is gratefully received. I know this is a difficult one and have already visited the LAM twice thus far. I will go again if necessary though. Anybody else out there who thinks they can even trace Elsie Marian's death I would love to hear from.

    Hallo 4everlooking,
The marriage Lady M found for Herbert Trevivick Pitman and Marian Madden is the correct one for EM's baptism gives father as Herbert Trevivick Pitman.(a policeman) I have also looked and not found Elsie Marion's marriage to William Goodman so it may be there was no actual marriage or that William was already married to someone else? At 24 Elsie Marian was still single. I know you probably have all this. I am just re-capping.
    Who was Kate Pitman?
I cannot find a baptism for Edith Maud.
Cannot find a death that fits for either an Elsie M Pitman or Goodman.
If she died in Middlesex in 1921 /22 then why isn't it there?
Could she not have died but married and just left Edna where she was? I guess it boils down to seeing the workouse/school records

Thanks for all your efforts Lola5. I have no idea who Kate Pitman was as she is not one of Elsie Marian's 8 siblings. As far as I can tell Edith Maud was baptised at a St Marks on 19/7/1922. This could have been in the Mitcham area? I wonder if Elsie Marian returned to St Luke's and died there? She had been in the St Luke's Infirmary 29/6/1920 to 17/7/1920 but I have no idea for what reason. Her death would have been between 19/8/1920 and 7/12/1920 and not in 1921/22. As you say, she could have abandoned Edith Maud and then married. I suppose the only way to check that would be based on her maiden name of Pitman. If necessary I will revisit the LMA again.

If you do go back to the LMA I would be checking to see if there is any further information to be found on Kate Pitman..The marriage of one Thomas Frederick W Goodman to a Pitman if thats who he married is too much of a coincidence..

I have noted your comments The Lady Marion and thank you. Can you please make a suggestion as to the avenue I explore at the LMA or would that be best left to the guidance they can offer?
