Exclamation Help with mary ann mumford/laskey!

    Hi All,

I have just begun researching my family tree and am (already!) frustrated regarding a maternal great-grandmother. All that I know about her (from my late mother) was that her name was Mary Ann Mumford, with Yetta possibly being another given name. Her maiden name was apparently Laskey or Lasky. Her spouse was perhaps Charles Mumford. She was possibly born in the 1870s or 1880s. Her children included Charles (Charlie) Mumford, Sarah Mumford, Margaret Mumford and Charlotte Mumford (married name Hobbrough). The family originates in the East End of London and lived in Bethnal Green.

I know that I have not given you much to go on but any info on Mary Ann herself or other members of her family would be very useful and very much appreciated!

    Kind regards,

    Lelly

You wouldn't happen to know if her mother's name was Marianna Louisa would you?
You see there are at least three Mary /Mary Ann Laskey's born that might fit.
There is a baptism on Nov 23 1887 for a Mary Ann Laskey born 20/11/1879 the daughter of William and Marianna Louisa laskey of 4 william St Islington together with her sister Annie Louisa Laskey who was born Mar 15 187? and a George Edwin Laskeybap Oct 31st/ Same parents, same address, father a labourer, Baptised at Clerkenwell St. Phillip Islington.(wii go back and check these.... )

Then there is a Mary Ann Laskey bap. 19 Feb 1888 at Stepney St. Thomas Tower hamlets daughter of Henry and Mary Ann laskey of 12 Warburgh St.
This family are living in Goswell St Holborn in 1891 and they now have Henry 1 and John George 5 mths as well as mary Ann aged 3
    RG12/229/folio37/page22.
And there is yet another whose parents are John Laskey and jane. John is born in Bermondsey and the family are living in Hammersmith. in 1901/

So.... which one? If any of these.

    Hi lelly,

How certain are you that Mary Ann's maiden name was Lask(e)y? I ask as there's a family on the 1911 census who fit the details you've given BUT I think the head of family, Charles Henry Mumford, married Mary Ann M Vickers.

1911, living Brady St, Bethnal Green, Maryann born Whitechapel, all others Bethnal Green, couple had been married 5yrs. RG14 Piece 1435 ED 18

    Charles Henry age 25,
    Maryann 25,
    Margaret 5,
    Charlotte 4,
    Charles 2 months

Do you know if Sarah was much younger than her siblings? There's a birth for Sarah A Mumford Bethnal Green, Dec qrt 1924, 1c/206, MMN Vickers. I cannot tell you the MMN of the three older children as MMN wasn't listed on the GRO index until Sept qrt 1911.

Lelly, do you not have your mother's birth certificate? It would give her mother's maiden name.

Any idea if Margaret had a middle name? Margaret in 1911 census is on the Ancestry Baptism's database, the others won't be on as the database only goes up to 1906, Margaret's middle name is Helen. Which of the girls is your mother? I'm hoping she's either Margaret or Sarah as we now know a little bit more about them, eg Margaret was Margaret Helen, and Sarah's MMN was Vickers (assuming the 1911 family is yours), but I fear you are going to tell me Charlotte was your mum as you know her married name. Maybe the only way to get beyond this stumbling block is to buy your mum's birth certificate, at least then you'll know you are on the right track. Do you have any other little snippets of info, where did Yetta come from?

By the way, I think the Charlotte on 1911 was born Jan-Mar 1908.

As I'm not sure I'm on the right track, I'll leave further searching until I hear back from you. Really need to know your mum's name and whether you have her birth certificate, and if the children on 1911 census match age wise with what you know, and if can confirm or otherwise whether Sarah was much younger than her siblings.
