Can anyone give me an idea on what type of uniform this is? It is of my mum's uncle Donald and he went to New Zealand around 1859. Born in Ross-shire Scotland about 1832.Don't know how old the photo is.Uncle Donald.jpg

Can you let me know his surname please? I will see what I can find out over here in NZ.
Cheers, Glen

Thanks Glen, that would be great. His name is Donald MacDonald and he lived in Dunedin all the time as far as I know. I thought it may have been an North Dunedin Volunteer Rifle uniform, but when I saw a photo of my Grandfathers uniform saw that there was no likeness. Kinda looks like a band uniform,I feel, but haven't been able to unearth any info there.
Ashazoe
Haven't forgotten you Ashazoe. No luck so far, but have not been searching too hard, as I'm organizing my daughter's surprize 40th birthday party. After this weekend will have more time.
Glen
I also think it looks like a band uniform..My Great Grandfather was a musician in the RA and his uniform from the photo I have looks very much like the one your Donald is wearing.

So far I have had absolutely no luck in finding a similar uniform here in NZ Ashazoe. The photo is a little blurry to make out any insignia though.
It is similar to some Blockade uniforms worn by garrisons during the Maori wars, but not similar enough.
Do you have any dates or other info that may point me in the right direction?
Cheers, Glen
