    Hi Pauline
Arthur James Allen was a Servant, as far as his relation to the head of the household, Mr William H Hyde, farmer of High Lee farm, Sutton. But Arthur's occupation was given as Carter on Farm.

Excuse me butting in but carters etc were knows as farm servants if they were employed by the farmer There were male indoor farm servants and outdoor ones.
Having many farmers and sons of farmers and ag labs in my tree I have learned quite a bit about them.

Thanks Lola, I had not connected Farm Servants as an alternative title for Ag Labourers or carters. Why not, I don't know!

Perhaps I didn't explain myself Brian,
Ag labs lived in cottages on the estate/farm/ in the village , usually owned by the farmer/landowner for whom they worked but farm servants. both inside and outside, male and female, that are listed within the farming household actually lived in and were fed at the kitchen table. They were considered part of the household. Some just did odd jobs around the place, helped with harvest etc. Others worked with the horses or horse and cart. What the inside, male servants did I haven't a clue- They weren't footmen or pages that's for sure.

The reason I thought they were the same, was that on the original census the enumarator has crossed out Carter on Farm , and put Ag Lab in the case of Arthur Allen. But I appreciate the explanation and distinction that you have made. Thank you

    But of course not Pauline.(grin!)
Brian and I never argue. We agree on absolutely everything . In fact all us four Mods and Brian , now an Administrator, are in complete harmony.
I was just putting in my two penn'orth because it is a subject that interests me(having so many of them them in my tree.... and not even a jot of the royalty as my mother always said we were connected to)
In my 3x great grandfather's household(he was a gentleman farmer!) two of the farm servants living with the household were his wife's brother and nephew!... so you see one never can tell.
