Default William Belsey on the GRAMPIAN 1908

    Hi

I have found a William Belsey leaving Liverpool to Halifax, Canada who is single and a labourer, he left on the 17th January 1908 on the GRAMPIAN.. Is there anyway to find out more about this William i.e his age, address or where he was heading too.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Sheila.

Sorry Sheila. I too found the information you have.but to look further you need to buy credits. on the F.M.P. Site

If you knew where he was born I would be able to look on the census for you. There was a free shipping list on Latter day saints
but I could not get on it. perhaps another member maybe able to help Sorry about that

    Hi
The original document only gives the information you already have, except that the vessel was bound for Saint John NB, Canada and that he was described as a British Colonial, not English, Welsh or Scotch. (Document headings not mine!!)

There is a William Belsey 30 on the 1911 Canadian census living in Ottawa and shown as lodger. There is also a William Belsey 5 shown on next line. The site does not give relationships. Go to automatedgenealogy.com

    Hi Sheila,

Can we approach this in a different way, it would be an easier search if we know when approx William was born and where. We can then search for him by birth year etc. Tell us all you know and we'll do an in depth search.

    Hi Slizzy

I am actually looking for a William Henry Belsey, which i originally posted on the Brick wall Forum and Brian has kindly tried to help me. The information is as follows
I am hoping someone can help me find out where William Henry Belsey disappeard too.
He is my Great Uncle and he was born in 1873 in Ramsgate, his father was Henry Andrew Belsey, his mother Mary ann Grigg.
he had 3 brothers and 4 sisters one being my grandmother for , which i have all their information, apart from William Henry.
So far i have him born in Ramsgate 1873
1881 Census has him living at 8 Sion Hill Cottages, Ramsgate, with his family.
1891 Census has him still living at 8 Sion Hill Cottages, Ramsgate with his family age 18 a Fisher Lad.

This is where he disappears, i can not find him on the 1901 or 1911 census or any marriages for him, so this set me thinking that perhaps he emigrated, i have taken a few wrong turns, one being that he went out to Canada on the Lake Erie in 1902 with a Margaret Belsey, but i have since found out that this was another William Belsey.

I have found another passenger list with a William Belsey on it, The Grampian on the 17th January 1902 it has him as a labourer, heading toward Halifax.

If you would like to read the post about William Henry Belsey it is on the Brickwall Forum and the answers that Brian came up with.

(I am still waiting for the death certificate for a William Belsey who died on board the Alliance (his birth is the same year as my William Henry) but have been told there will not be much information on there and also someone suggested this was an American ship and this William could possibly be a American Marine.)

I found the Passenger List for the Grampian but no date of birth and was wondering perhaps this could be him, I have followed the advice of the above (Thank you JColtee) and found the automated geneology site on LDS and found 2 1911 census with William Belsey on it, the first had his date of birth as 1880 arrived in 1902 an Agent, and i have linked this to another Belsey, and the 2nd was born in 1892 age 19 a labourer, saying he arrived in 1906 so this could possibly be the William on the GRAMPIAN although this actually arrived in 1908, but this is not the WilliamHenry i am actually looking for.

So to sum it up I am looking for William Henry Belsey born 1873 in Ramsgate last trace i have of him is on the 1891 census age 18 and cannot find anything after that, ie, 1901 census, death date, marriage, so my only conclusion was that he went abroad, not necessarily to Canada, i have been looking through all the Passenger list, another one i found was for a William in 1898 going to Agentina, Rosario, on the THAMES, but on the list it says did not embark, so perhaps that was him and he got on another ship.

As you will see in my other post he is not the William Henry Belsey who married a Caroline Kendall, as i have the marriage certificate for these and the father of this William Henry is Thomas Belsey and not Henry Andrew Belsey , i first made the mistake of pairing William Henry with Caroline but this is definately not his wife.

So any help in tracking down William Henry Belsey would be much appreciated as he has foxed me.

    Thanks

    Sheila.

    Hi Sheila,

I've done a lot of searching this evening for William and exhausted all the sites I have access to. I found a William H Belsy who was a Boer War Soldier but there's no information to tie him to your chap.

William H Belsy, private number 2852, 14th King's Hussars. The Queen's South Africa (QSA) Medal Clasps: Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Dreifontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill

I think the most likely is William who died at sea, and I hope the death certificate has enough info to prove/disprove.

Let us know please when you receive the death cert. If it isn't him we can continue to search.

    Hi again

Thought the 14th Hussars rung a bell this is the "RED HERRING" William Henry Belsey, who i mentioned in my early post, who was married to Caroline Kendall and whose parents are Thomas Henry Belsey and Mary.

So this is not him, just leaves the poor William Belsey who died at sea.

    Sheila.

    PS.
i wrote a previous post to this but noticed it is not on there must have lost it.

It was to Slizzy thanking you for your hard work in looking for William Henry Belsey, i have matched the William Henry in the Boer War to another William Henry, (as above). This only leaves William who died at sea. The death cert should take another week, will let you know when i receive it.

    Thanks again.

    Sheila.
