Default West Yorkshire Archives look-up please

Hello I'm wondering whether anyone makes regular visits to wherever the Birstall Parish Records are kept, please? I would like confirmation of a rather strange name. It's a marriage that took place 22 May 1610. The names I have for this marriage are Thomas Mortimer and Agnes Wood.

However, I have been given to think this could be wrong and that the name of the groom is Espmab Mortimer which seems to be a unique name as I can't find it anywhere else. That is the given name, I know the surname is OK.

I wonder if the handwriting has been misinterpreted and hope that it will be possible for a very kind person with time on their hands, to check the original entry for me, please.

    Living in hope,
    Maid of Kent

    Hello Bronson 211,

Thank you very much for looking this up for me. Can I please ask where you found the information? It's strange that a marriage record has a spouse as "Mrs" and the husband's name. It's the kind of thing I have found on IGI.

    Hello Bronson,

Yes, I thought that was where you must have found it. And I can't accept that it is correct; especially when the marriage you refer to above was 1570 and not 1670. Shows up just how mistakes can be made.

However, I have just sent you a personal message which I do hope gets through to you as I had a bit of trouble with it. I might just go and send it to you a second time just in case. Or perhaps I could paste it here, I will try.

    Hello Bronson,

Yes, this is the problem when accepting what someone else has posted on their Tree. And the reason why I want someone who is able to actually go to the archives for West Yorkshire, which I believe are in Halifax.

As far as the Thomas Mortimer/Johanna Best marriage is concerned, that took place as follows and written in Latin:

Yorkshire: Halifax - Registers of Marriages and Burials, 1538-1593
    Ao Dni 1545 466
    Marriages 1538--1593.
    County: Yorkshire
    Country: England
Thos Mortymer pe de Bradforthe et Johanna Best istius poch. 01 Feb 1545

So obviously not in Cornwall as Thomas was from Bradford, Johanna was from 'this Parish' and the marriage took place in the Halifax area. I do know the person who made the original assumption that this marriage was in Cornwall - he is a distant Mortimer cousin of mine, Robert Mortimer. Several others have accepted his information as correct without checking for themselves. This is what I am trying to do with the later marriage to Agnes Wood.

So, thanks, but I don't need you to send me this information. I will reply to your posting on the forum separately so that anyone else can see it if they wish.

I have deleted the last para from general viewing as it was more personal. You can see it on your personal message if it gets through.

    Kind regards,
    Maid of Kent
