    Default Hannah/Anna Hancock 1842- 1856

    Have hit a major brickwall.

I didnt know the above person existed untill I came across the burial records for Collumpton, Devon while looking for the rest of the Hancocks.
I have obtained the death certificate and it confirms that she was a member of my family. But the problem is she does not appear on the 1851 census nor can I find a birth registered for her.

Can anyone advise or offer me any help???

    les,
Sometimes they can't be found on censuses for whatever reason; mistranscription/ away from home at the time or simply omitted in error by the enumerator.
We will have a look and see if we can find her for you. My Grandma was fit and well and living at home in 1901 but she is not on the census!
Who were Hannah/ Anna's parents do you know?

    Hi Les,

Is it only Hannah you cannot find in 1851? Or are her parents and siblings missing too? If just Hannah have tried searching by initials only as sometimes Institutions listed patients by just initials.

If the whole family are missing please tell us the names of her parents and siblings and approx year of births.

    Hi, Slizzy/Lola
    Thanks for your replies.
It is only Hannah I cannot find. I found her parents Joseph and Elisa and all of the other siblings. Like I say I accidently stumbled on Hannah.

Her father Joseph was a brickmaker in Collumpton and he had a brother John who was also a brickmaker but in Exeter(very wealthy) and on the 1851 census it lists Hannahs sister mary as living at Johns in Exeter as a servant. Hannah died in 1856 in Exeter hospital in St Sidmouth and was then returned to Collumpton for burial. I suspect that Hannah was also working at Johns when she passed, But I am unable to confirm this. I also obtained a copy of Johns will where he leaves a substancial amount of money and property to his siblings but nothing to his brother Joseph(Hannahs dad). I now suspect that Hannahs death had caused a family rift lasting 40 years.

    Thanks les,
I have the family on 1851. So Hannah would have been born between Maria who was 10 and Eliza who was 8?
I cannot seem to find Hannah.
Might she have been with grandparents?

Still cannot find her. You have the death cert. Does it have one of the parents present at the death? and an address where death took place.

    Lola,

Thanks ever so much for your help with this.

There was no real information on the death certificate. She died in hospital in Exeter, Informant was Mary Coles, I suspect a ward sister. She died of Struma Swelling of the gland around the neck , causing brain affliction.

As for the grand parents I have been unable to trace them. John Hancock is listed as Josephs father on a couple of certs I have and being a silk weaver as his profession on both.
John and Joseph were both born in Taunton 1814 and 1823 , with a third sibling being born in Wilton in 1816. But thats as far as I can get.
    Thanks again,
    Les
