Hello Emma, I have sent you a welcome message on your visitor messages on your profile. First have you checked Ireland Civil Registration Indexes 1845-1958 found on the Family Search site? Do you think she was also born in Londonderry? did she marry?

Hi, thanks for replying! i@ll have to check tht site! i reckon she was born 1865 and 1880 as bfor 1865 would hav made her quite old to be havin a baby and past 1880 would have been to young!! My Grandfather was illegitimate and there was no fathers name on the birth certificate! i have tried lookin through the workhouse records at PRONI but Londonderry has one of the worst kept wortkhouse records , so ive been told! The lady at PRONI said it was more than likely she was born in Lononderry but whether she ever left the workhouse or married is jus a mystry!!

Also worth checking is the GENUKI site for co Derry. Do you know if she had a middle name?
    I found six Mary Devenny's born in Co Derry - 2 in 1874 - 2 Mary Anne's in 1879 and 2 Mary Jane's in 1882

The workhouse is now a museum their email addres [if you do not already have it] is museums@derrycity.gov.uk
    and telephone no 028 7131 8328

worth a try they may be able to help

I assume that your John Devenny was staying with the McElroy family in Carnakilly Lower in the 1901 & 1911 censuses. In both censuses he is described a s a boarder, perhaps suggesting someone was paying for him to stay there. But maybe it was just a cosmetic description. I suppose there’s a possibility any arrangement for his background and future care was mentioned in John McElroy’s will, which should be in PRONI, Belfast. Here’s the abstract:

McElroy Robert of Carnakilly county Londonderry farmer died 14 April 1916 Administration Londonderry 21 February to John McElroy engine driver. Effects £5.

There was no law on Adoption/fostering in Northern Ireland till the late 1920s and prior to that most children were just handed over on informal oral arrangements. No paperwork.

Does John have a middle name on his birth certificate? (Sometimes with illegitimate births, the mother put the father’s name in as a middle name).

    Elwyn ,t
Thanks so much for your reply!!

i never thought of looking for a will!

John was boarded out of the workhouse to the mcElroy family and took their name so they could recieve his war payments! He has no middle name on his birth certificate.

We had been told about people writing to the workhouse askin for children to help around the home n thought this is what had probably happened to my grandfather! They also boarded another child called Maggie Coyle!

Where did you find the abstract from Roberts will? Is it online?

Yes the abstract is on-line. See:

Introduction | Public Record Office of Northern Ireland

PRONI are in the process of putting the wills themsleves on line but haven't got to 1916 yet. To see it you either need to pay PRONI to send you a photocopy (there is a fee) or get someone to go in to PRONI to copy it for you.

Date of grant simply means the date that probate was granted (which can sometimes be many years after the date of death). Probate is when the estate has been assessed for tax etc and when approval has been given to the executors to distribute the various bequests in the will.

When you get to the PRONI reading room, you go to one of the computers used for ordering documents. There is a dedicated field for ordering wills. Enter the name, date of death & date of probate grant. That should be sufficient to find the will. You will then get the original sent up about 20 minutes later, which you can read and copy. (You get the original will plus the probate documents). If you have a memory stick, you can make you own copies on to it, using a special photocopier, at 30p a sheet. Or PRONI will copy the documents for you for about 40p a sheet. Typically, there’s the will itself (1 or 2 pages), the blue probate form (4 pages), an inventory or two of the assets, plus the forms in which the executor(s) swear to carry out their duties honestly (which you may not want to copy).

You need photo id, to get a readers ticket, so take a passport or driving licence.
