Are there any sites for free where you can research/look-up obituaries/deaths in local newspapers?

Hi
Not that i know of, but if you contact the public library in the relevant town, and you know the approximate date, many will look for the article.

Searching for Twizell, Brown & Storey from Northumberland. Kelly & Kinsella from Ireland, Parkinson from Lincolnshire. Mellor from Derbyshire and Jackson from Warwickshire.
Hello Jude, Not that long ago a distant relation of mine passed away who was in her mid 80s and although she passed away in one county the death was recorded in the local news paper where she was born in another county by one of her children..If I know where the person was born I just google search newspapers and the place name and browse through the obituaries ..Thats how I found the info I needed...I was also able to leave a small message for the family even though they don't know of me and add a little bouquet of flowers as it gives you that option and its free..I suppose it would also depend on what time frame you are searching for as well and if the family did infact publish the death in the news paper..I also live in Australia so I have no knowledge of the names of some of the UK news papers.

I think the only way you would find cause of death would be from the Death Cert..The cert will also tell you when and where the person died age and sex (Male/Female) and their name in full..Signature,description and residence of informant.,when the death was registered,Occupation, and signature of Registrar..If the deceased person was female and her husband was the informant it might read under occupation... Wife of William George Brown a Labourer in Soap Factory of ...(Their address..) If this is the first time you have ordered a cert you can order on line through the GRO General Records Office..I order all my certs through them as I find other places can be more expensive..

I agree Marion about the cert and some places being expensive, I just learnt that lesson.. thankfully only ordered one.. think I may purchase death certs - from the GRO - as like you say its the only way to find out what the cause of death was apart from family members if they are able to remember or are still living. I have all details to order those now so I think that's my next step. Thanks Marion.
