Hallo aberdareward,
Welcome to Ancestry Aid,
Good Luck with your research.
Can you tell us a little more about George please. What info do you have already.
What was his occupation?
Regards
Lola
Hello I have found a George Mercer on the 1841 Census. With Parents.William and Elizabeth Mercer. It puts George Born
in Preston. But that is close to Tydesley. Then I found him on the 1851. Still same parent. Then on 1861. with Wife Ann
this did state born in Tydsley. Before I post all information I will look up Marriages to see If same Parents
name are on certificate or Birth.
Hi Bronson211
Thanks for your help and interest.George was a coal miner.I seem to remember finding his mother as Elizabeth. I have no knowledge of his father however.
Regards Tim his great great grandson.
George was a coal miner. I think that his mother was Elizabeth. Thanks for your interest.
Regards aberdareward
think this is his baptism

This fits with what I expected. This is a church traditionally used by Mercer family. Tyldesley is more likely than Preston although the names of mother and son fit. I have a copy of his first marriage certificate. No father is named. He gives his age 19 but this would mean that he was born in 1840. Still not too sure, perhaps he lied about his age!
well first tyldsley baptism would fit in with no father being named on marriage cert. strangely though cant seem to find him on 1841 or 1851 census with just mother elizabeth. can see the other george mercer with william and elizabeth. a tree on ance***Y has the george with parents william and elizabeth emigrating to australia and marrying and dying there so it doesnt sound like that is your george if they are right. with regards to age on marriage cert - he could have lied or another thought i had was did the original george die and she had another child she named George too as often happens but there is no baptism for that. will look more later if i have time
This is very helpful. I have had trouble finding him. I think that he moved to Leigh Lancs seems to be him and Ann in the 1861 and 1871 censuses but by 1881 he had returned to Tyldesley. in 1885 Ann died. George remarried a Matilda Mullenger originally from Norfolk who my late uncle could vaguely remember as being the oldest woman in Tyldesley she died at 95 in 1934. Many thanks for your help. Where in Wales were you born? I was born in Aberdare my mothers home town.
