Default George Clarke born about 1838 Woburn Bedfordshire

Can I get some help please with a George Clarke born about 1838 Woburn Bedfordshire..There seems to have been two George Clarke's born about the same time and both born in Woburn..Not knowing anything about George apart from what the 1891 Census state I am left wondering which George Clarke born Woburn Bedfordshire is my ancestor?.. Here is my George on the 1891 Census with Annie Clarke down as spouse..Annie and George were never married so I do not have a marriage cert which might record George's Fathers name and profession..Later Annie moved to East London and did marry in 1900 recorded as Spinster...If this mystery can be solved it will open a new branch to my family tree.. 1891 Census below..

Who did Annie Clarke marry in London in 1900 ? Did she marry under the surname of Clarke.

Thanks Guys..Yes Annie(Hannah) was my Great Grandmother and she came from Abingdon in Berks. I have no information on George Clarke born about 1835 apart from what the census state..Being as there were two George Clarkes born about the same time in Woburn I don,t know which one is mine..He could have been a married man as the story goes and left his wife..? My Grandfather has George,s name down as Father on his birth cert..Frederick and George junior have no Fathers names mentioned on their birth certs..I do believe though that George junior born Hemel Hempstead was my Grandfathers full brother..

    Thankyou

Just going through some old emails and I came across this one..I never got the Inquest papers..Did you Mike?

    Hi Marion
I received the death certificate for George Frederick Clarke.
Not much help to us unfortunately and rather sad.
    I'll give you the info.
    21st December 1897 London Dock
    George Frederick Clarke
    54 years
Dock Labourer of 61 Barron Road Canning Town
Found dead, suffocation by drowning but how the deceased came to be in the water there is no evidence to show.
Certificate received from B K Houchin deputy coroner for city of London. Inquest held 19th December 1897.
    Registrar Alexander Littlejohn.
I know you can get the inquest papers but have not found how I can get them from London. Not sure if they would help us anyway.
George Clarke still remains a mystery!!
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also wondering if our George Clarke was the one down as Tramp who spent a short time in the Oxford Workhouse? Maybe that's where Annie (Hannah) met him?

    This taken from another email..

However a George Clarke born about 1845 appears as a "casual" (i.e. a tramp) in the Union Workhouse in Hemel Hempstead although it says b Richmansworth.

Darn it, I will add the whole thing in order to find George Clarke..(maybe)
This email sent to me in 2008 from a kind lady trying to help who had connections to Clarke from Woburn..

This is what I have found out about George Clarke.
His father was Josiah Clarke born about 1825/9 in Mousloe Bucks and his mother was Caroline Foxley who was very young when they married in JFM 1844 Ampthill Beds 6/5.George Clarke was born OND 1844 Woburn 6/119. He was always referred to as George Frederick Clarke. AMJ 1867 he married Jane Chapman Woburn 3b/367 who was born in Evershott Beds. In 1871 Jane was living with her parents in Evershott and had two children -- 1.George Roobert Josiah Clarke b. 1867 Woburn and 2. Minnie Louisa Clarke b 1870 Evershott.Husband George Clarke cannot be found on any census, Maybe he was in the military or away on work.
In 1881 George R L was living with grandparents Josiah and Caroline. They ran a grocer's shop at 19 Bedford Street Woburn. I can't find mother Jane Clarke or their daughter Minnie Louisa.
However a George Clarke born about 1845 appears as a "casual" (i.e. a tramp) in the Union Workhouse in Hemel Hempstead although it says b Richmansworth.Workhouse records were not 100% correct.
In 1891 a George Clarke from Woburn is living with a much younger " wife" called Annie. Both children are given the name Clarke Frederick b 1883 Oxford and George 1888 Hemel Hempstead so it is probable that Fred was not the son of George but George was.I don't think George was too sure of his age ?1838.
In 1893 Albert Clarke was born JAS 1893 Hemel Hempstead 3a/639.
Then the family may have moved to London.
A George Frederick Clarke died OND 1897 St Geo in the East 1c 291 says born 1843. This death certificte may give more info.I'll try to get hold of this.
Then in OND 1898 West Ham Annie Moreton married William Payne born 1863 Chesham Bucks.
1901 Plaistow London Annie and William Payne had 4 children;-
    1. Frederick Moreton JAS 1883 Headington Oxon 3a/727
    2. George Moreton b AMJ 1888 Hemel Hempstead 3a 591
    3. Albert Clarke b JAS 1893 Hemel Hempstead 3a/639
    4. Emily Payne b 1900
Tracing Annie Moreton back to Abingdon Berks she seems to be Hannah Moreton b 1860 in 1881 is a lodger. Perhaps her parents had died as they quite old when she was born. She then went into Oxfrod Workhouse to have her first child Frederick. Do you have his birth certificate? A father may not be mentioned. Could it be that she met George Clarke in this workhouse as casuals were only allowed to stay a short time in one workhouse. Or she may have moved to Hemel Hempstead and met George there. We will never know for sure.

    Default George & Annie

    Hi

I have spent a number of days checking and cross checking the BMD & census records for the various George Clark(e) listed. To be truthful I am no nearer deciding which one was living with Annie.

However, reading your threads causes me some concern as it appears to me, and I maybe wrong, that you have made unfounded assumptions!

You say that GC was born OND 1844 Woburn 6/119 and he was always referred to as George Frederick Clarke. Where is the information to justify this statement? This reference only gives him as George Clarke not GFC. Have you used the 1851 & 1861 Census to assume that GFC, born about 1845, is the GC referred to in ref: 6/119?

If you cannot justify this statement you cannot justify the statement that his parents are; Josiah Clarke born about 1825/9 in Mousloe Bucks and his mother was Caroline Foxley who was very young when they married in JFM 1844 Ampthill Beds 6/5

He could very well be the same person but it is very dangerous to assume so! Remember also that GC living with Annie in 1891 (Census) was born in Woburn about 1838 not 1844. (could be wrong of course)!

Also Jane Chapman was born in Eversholt, Beds., not Evershott.

Annie (Hannah) Moreton was born 30 Sep 1859 not in 1860 as you have stated. Her father died in 1875 and her mother died in 1880.

Annie married William Payne 6 Nov 1898 Holy Trinity Barking Road West ham

I have found George Clarke & A. Clarke living at 242 St. Leonards Road in two unfurnished rooms in the 1895, 1896 & 1897 London, England, Electoral Registers, 1847-1965. So far I cannot find them anywhere else. If GC did die in 1897 then it is improbable that I will find her in these records and as women were not usually shown as they did not have the vote.
