Default James Ross b1826 Kingstown Dublin Eire.

Hi can anyone help please this is my maternal great great father. I am trying to trace the family in Ireland. James came to the UK after 1841 As he shows on the 1851 Census and married here in 1855. Can anyone help me in finding his roots on Ireland or point me in the right direction please. Thanks Mike

Hello Fazeman. Would you be able to give any more details about your G.G.Grandfather.

Do you have names of parents.? or whom he married.? I will then look on the Irish records for you.

    HI
Well he is the end of my line at the moment. He married a Julia Marman in 1855 in Poplar, East London. But she was from Ireland as well. I can only assume that him marrying her was a pure coincident, (that she was Irish) or they came over before they were married. I am sorry I don't have anymore info.

    Thanks for you help

Statutory records of births, deaths & marriages started in Ireland on 1.1.1864 (1st April 1845 for Protestant and Non-Conformist marriages). Prior to that you are heavily dependant on church records, where they exist. (Some have been lost, some are incomplete and some are not yet on line). To use church records effectively, because there’s no centralised index, ideally you need to know the ancestor’s exact religion, townland and parish in Ireland. (Otherwise it’s a needle in a haystack). Copies of most RC records are held in the National Library, Dublin, Church of Ireland (ie Anglican) in the Representative Church body in Dublin. For other denominations you would need to contact the individual church to ascertain what records they have and where they are kept. Not every church will have records going back to the era you are researching. If you know his religious denomination, and that he came from Kingstown (now Dun Laoghaire), you should be able to track down the relevant parish records. They are probably not on-line and you would need to get someone to look them up for you.

    Fazerman,
On 1901 Kingstown Dublin census there is a Thomas Ross, aged 61 living in Haddington Terrace(Irish census records for 1901/1911 are online).
He is a hotel proprieter and is of the Church of Ireland and was born in County Derry.
It is possible that he is somehow related to your James.
Have a look also at the coraweb.com.au site which you may find helpful.

There is a lot of information re Irish ancestors coming onto the web so don't give up.Roman Catholics are just a easy to find as those of other faiths as the churches held onto the records and in some parishes the priest will be helpful. There are three RC churches in Kingstown, St Michael's, St Pauls.s andSt. John's.
Have you looked on the LDS site. Try the Pilot search on there. There are several James Ross in both Dublin South and North. You have date and place so that is an enormous help.
How do you know of the marriage to Julia in poplar East London in 1855? If you could get that marriage cert then it would give both the fathers' occupations and that would make things easier. Here it is Apl/May/Jun 1855 Poplar East London Julia Marman to James Ross. gro no.
