    Default Strange Occupation

The 1911 census shows my Gandfather was a "chaff cutter in bus yard" !! Has anyone any idea what this was please.

    Hallo brendabarnes,
Might he have been employed cutting up straw into small pieces which would be then mixed with some hay or grain for horses' nose-bags? The" buses "would have been horse drawn and the horses might be standing around waiting for long periods of time so had sacking nose-bags filled with fodder. Horse drawn buses in London were phased out by 1912 in London but other places still had them.

    Hi
If you Google 'Chaff cutter' you will find pictures of a Chaff cutter. They are rather like todays garden shredder, except no safety guards and had a large handle that you had to turn. Although in bus garage they may have had a tractor powered cutter. They were used, as Lola says, to cut up straw or hay for horse feed.
