Default Can anyone read this Nationality from the 1911 Scottish Census?

    Hi All,

I am looking into my family history on my Mothers side. I have tracked down my Grandfather (Thomas Nelson B.1907) on the 1911 census. My Great Grandfather was Horatio Nelson and his given place of birth on the census is St Thomas, West Indies, I can't however make out his nationality.

    Can anyone help?

Also, does anyone have any information or sources of information on St Thomas and a likely place to find further records?

    Thanks in advance
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

It looks like Dane to me, so Danish?

    Hi Slizzy,

I have been doing a bit more research this afternoon and found that St Thomas was a Danish colony from c.1700 - 1917 before it became the US Virgin Islands. I think your right it is "Dane", this would make a lot of sense.

Very interesting, keen to find out more.

Chris, also think about alternate spellings, as if Horatio was Danish the original spelling is likely to be Nielson/Nielsen/etc.

Google "St Thomas West Indies" genealogy, and see what hits you get; there are some help forums but I understand West Indies genealogy isn't easy to trace as many records weren't kept, or haven't survived.
