    Default Burial conundrum!

    Hi !!....a little enlightenment please

My G.G Grandparents were buried in 'unconsecrated' - General Non Church Of England - Class C graves together, in 1934 and 1952...in Kingston, Surrey ( uknown which cemetery as yet)

Does this mean that they were Catholics buried in a CofE cemetery?....or another denomination possibly?

    Hi Katie,
    Non conformists
    Jews
    Roman Catholics
    Suicides
    and the Unbaptised
    were buried in unconsecrated ground.
Before 1880 no person could be buried in consecrated or hallowed ground unless they had the service of the church .... so Roman Catholics etc would not want/have the services of a C of E church so were put in the unhallowed ground. Then there was a Burial Law Amendment Act of 1880 to change things.... so I don't see that any of this could affect burials in 1934 and 1950,s?
Were your folk Jews or Quakers or others?
Why not contact Kingston Cemetery and see where your people are and why. They have plans and maps of the cemetery.

Hi Lola....I emailed the cemetery yesterday, ( since posting this ) as I found out that my ancestors had a private vault!...unsure if this means that they were wealthy ...or another reason???...so fingers crossed that they can locate it....I have the details , so am guessing it shouldn't be difficult for them....don't fancy traipsing around a few acres on the lookout! x

Sounds interesting! Do let us know what you find.
If you happen to have any people buried Richmond/ Twickenham then you will be very pleased with the Richmond site. You just put a name into the cemetery search and up come the names/dates/plots/grave numbers and in some cases the addresses of where death occurred. It's just fab! Thank you to whoever thought of it/organised it. If only more local councils would follow suit.
Your question set me off searching again and I found two more of mine that I had not found previously. Many thanks!

Hi Lola...well had a reply from the cemetery this morning and I can either visit and get directions or they can send me a map....sadly my ancestors ( even thouh they are in a vault) have no headstone...just a vase :-( .... so I am even more confused now as to their chosen religion ...or maybe they didn't have one??? ( would that be normal to not have a religion ???????? ...yes I have been on that site and this is how I found my ancestors details...it is fab and I agree that it would make our lives so much easier if all cemeteries did the same!!!.....Do you have ancestors in this area too? xx

p.s ....I have absolutely no blinkin' idea about whether they could be Jewish or Quakers....but it's set the old grey matter on high alert and am now diving into some websites......strange as I am CofE and so were my parents..., so I just assumed that it followed suit from their parents etc....but maybe not lol !!!!... xx

Do you have baptisms for these two? Not that it makes much difference as people often change their beliefs. Yes! perfectly normal to change/discard a particular belief. Quakers liked to be buried in Friends burial ground if possible. I have Quakers, RC's, Methodists, C of E and possibly a Jew or two way back in my lot.
I cannot see why the ground was unconsecrated in 1930's and those old rules didn't apply anyway so maybe it was that the cemetery ran out of space and used adjoining land that was awaiting consecration? Why were they in a vault? Rich/titled/what? see if their parents/grandparents are there too.
Kingston... yes... I have had and still have family there. Richmond also ,down several generations. I lived near and never knew the several times greats were born/lived/died there. Walked past the house they lived in and never knew.

After all that searching...it has just dawned on me that I had their marriage cert ....they were married at a CofE Church, so that puts paid to any other theory LOL !!!!! Didn't think I came from Jewish / Quaker stock tbh.....I am now hazarding a guess that they were buried in Unconsecrated ground, due to the fact, that my ancestor may not have been baptised, as he was the one who was adopted!.....BUT !!!... then do you ( or anyone else) know if he was able to marry at a CofE Church if he wasn't baptised?????????.......feel like I'm going round in circles hahahaha xxx

Sorry I have just read your earlier post....my ancient PC forgets to refresh !!! .... I don't have baptism records for either ( one was adopted).....and the other unknown, though I do have her birth details. When i go to the cemetery, I shall ask if they know the reason why they were buried there....who knows they could have a record of some type explaining....it's all detective work at the end of the day lol !!!!....yes my 'lot' were in Kingston and Richmond too...strangely from both sides of the family...though I doubt if they knew each other!...heck we could even be related lol....that would be very odd ! xx

No it's not odd. On another post somewhere someone spoke of "6 degrees of separation"

Just a quick update Lola....went to visit the 'grave' and there is nothing there bar a patch of grass between two other graves ...definitely had the right plot as they were all numbered either side....so it is very sad. Have written to an aunt to see if she has any memory or knowledge. xx
